Question

How can you protect your pictures on your web site? I've seen it on some sites that if you try to right click the image it comes up 'copyright of...blah.com' How can I do this with my site? I have created the site using FrontPage 2000.

Thanks

Tim

Well, you can add some simple javascript which disables right clicking on web pages, but you can get around this.

Another way is to put a very faint copyright message across the image.

Hope this helps.

You need to create a sript block in the head section of you html document. This holds the function that traps the rightclick

<script language="javascript">
<!--
function rtclickcheck(keyp){
if (navigator.appName == "Netscape" && keyp.which == 3){alert(RClkMsg);
next();}
if (navigator.appVersion.indexOf("MSIE") != -1 && event.button == 2){alert(RClkMsg);
next();}}
-->
</script>

In the body of your html you need another script block to set up your html document to process the right click. You can set RClkMsg to what ever you want

<script language="javascript">
<!--
var RClkMsg="Right Click is disabled";
document.onmousedown = rtclickcheck;
-->
</script>

Matt

You've just told Tim how to get around it

LOL

Definately the techie answer

I don't know of any way of stopping people nicking pics, but ChristianR had something going, as the pic would only load 99%. Obviously then it won't copy...

Stick to copyright notices, followed up by legal action I say

I reckon that if you post it on the Web then you have to expect it to get ripped off - if you don't like it then don't post it.

Legal action will only work in the same country and the cost would usually make it prohibitive anyway....

You can rip Flash now though using a program called "flashripit" or something. As always it is available for free on the net

Scripting can be turned off to stop the blocker so no need to start picking at the code

Basically you cant stop it, sorry mate

Cheers guys

I've disabled the right click option on the pages I wanted to protect. Now how do I protect a thumbnail because all anyone needs to do is open the thumbnail and then right click that? I don't know how to add a html code to these as it opens up Explorer and not a FP page.

Any idea's

Thanks for all your help.

I, too, have had this issue. I want to protect images so that they're only available to registered users who are logged on.

I ended up storing 'em as blobs in a database...

Tim,

there is nowt that you can do to stop people copying pictures - they can always screen-grab!

Post a low-res (i.e. web-friendly) image, not a 2000*1500 photo-quality version so they can't pinch much. Also, some applications (e.g. my Fuji camera) allow you to include copyright information in the picture itself. There might even be a JPEG "watermark" that you can include - which although won't stop copies, it can prove where they came from!

Cheers for the replies guys

I think I might just add a copyright notice on each photo. I understand that there's not much else I can do, I just wanted to try and prevent someone from nicking my pictures.

Well, it looks like I am updating my pictures this weekend then

Tim,
I have just been to your site, and yes it suppose having a copyright messege whenever you click the right button is a way to deter the opportunist image theif, but is very annoying if you just want to open a bit in a different window (before you all jump, I know I can just hold the shift key to perform this!).

Anyway just my 2p really
