PC133 memory in a 100Mhz FSB PC?
#1
Should I have a problem with 128Mb PC100 and 128Mb (new) PC133 in the same machine - 'cos I have.
It seems to fail the POST (with three beeps) 50% of the time, works the other 50%
When PC133 removed, it all works fine. When replaced it again fails 50% of the time
If the video card is 'tapped' with the box open and the PC133 fitted, it starts up *most* times OK.
Have played with the CAS settings on 2 or 3 nd it makes no difference
Any thoughts - sounds like faulty memory to me???

Does it work with just the PC133 module?
is it an old mobo?
some struggled with too much memory as it takes voltage to drive it. Have you a setting to up I/O voltage?
Some sticks of RAM just wont work together.
Are you sure its seated correctly?
how many RAM slots do you have? if you have 4 treat them as pairs, and place 1 stick in each pair. This can somtimes help, it wont if you only have 3 slots though.
erm, what else, set all RAM settings to the easiest value, i.e. CAS 3 not 2, lowest speed to access etc.
Where did you get this RAM? If you can return for credit, and can afford £59 + VAT, but a 256Mb stick of PC133 from

Have you tried removing and reinserting the video card after putting in the PC133 memory, to make sure that the board flex when putting the memory in has'nt upset the video card socket?

The main problem is that one set of memory is able to return the requested data faster than the other - gives signalling issues. When the machine boots, does it crash after a while?
You may find that swapping them round helps (put the 100mhz in slot 0)
However, all manufacturers state you should really not mix the PC100/133 memory.
128Mb PC133 memory is about £32+VAT - save yourself the hassle and buy another one!!!

Thanks for all the info so far.
To clarify some points:
1. Don't know if just the 133 on it's own works, will check tonight.
2. RAM is def. seated correctly have three slots in the machine and have tried all combinations of slot usage
3. Will play with the BIOS settings tonight to get them all to easiest value and try again
4. Machine doesn't crash after a while if boot is successful
5. Will certainly consider just replacing the 100 with 133, I was under the impression that this was an OK config. but with the price of memory what it is, it may not be worth messing about with
Thanks for the help, will report back tomorrow!

It's not worth the bother of trying to get mixed speeds to work. As you've found, the PC is not happy. I have managed to get them to work in some PC's and run tests (non-scientific) and mixed is slower than two of the same speed. And can cause the PC to crash during use.

Thanks for the replies chaps.
Now sorted - I'm afraid the problem was actually the video card...
...substituted with a known good one and all is now fine - 384Mb memory present and it doesn't seem to mind that some is PC100 and some is PC133
