Do ultrasonics affect chickens and *****? You can buy those "anti bark" collars for dogs, and I wonder if ingenuity could be applied???

Next-door has installed a chicken run complete with hens & a f***in' cockrell 10ft from my bedroom

It started @ 03.00 this AM

Any *LEGAL* suggestions of how to assist it's urgent removal appreciated.

Shot-guns & rat-poison not really an option & I would like to stop short of criminal damage & physically ringing its neck.

I have been in touch with environmental health & although eventually we can get a case together to force it's removal, it'll take a long time. With the hours I work, I need my beauty sleep, so before I'm driven completely mad by noise & lack of sleep, any help would be appreciated.

Cool

It would be a terrible tragedy if the run was accidentally left open and a fox got hold of it wouldn't it.........

Talk nicely to your neighbours. If this fails tell them you are going to get a very large cat. If they can't be responsible for their pet then you can't be responsible for yours. Chances are the cat won't be able to get into the chicken run ( unless you can find one that is handy with wire cutters :- , but it will make the cockerel nervous. The cockerel will either become very quiet or extremely agitated, thus annoying the neighbours all the time. The cat will also crap in their garden.

Alternatively, buy ear plugs

Put a bowl of laxative fluid in the run. The Cockrell will be too busy sh1tting to start crowing all the time

You could try one of those super soaker water cannon thingies. A regular soaking every time it opens it's beak might make it shut up. Also shouldn't harm the thing too much.

In the dim and distant past when I was doing Physics, i seem to remember reading in a text that frequencies of 7Hz and chickens dont mix! Now in the interests of science....

Editied to include (got my wires crossed with the physics bit!):

This is taken verbatim from a Borland computer manual

True story: 7 Hz is the resonant frequency of a chicken's skull cavity. This was determined empirically in Australia, where a new factory generating 7-Hz tones was located too close to a chicken ranch:
When the factory started up, all the chickens died.

HowardB: you're right!

Bloody big subwoofer that can really, really plumb the depths (avoid 12Hz, it's the resonant frequency of your bladder) and you'll hit the resonant frequency of the little sod's cranium.

Pete Newall, Demon God of Total Harmonic Distortion, managed to kill budgies at a Middlesex Show back in 96 which combined a bird show and car audio sound off.

Question

I think fast bloke has the right idea. Go and try and sort it out first. Maybe the neigbour is getting as fed up of it as you are. Being nice and polite is by far the best way to go. Sure take legal recourse as and when required. But once you start down that route the neighbourly atmosphere is usually damaged beyond repair.

The cat idea, although amusing could well strike up resentment in the medium/long term. IF you were to take up that approach, it's better that you don't announce it to the neighbour. That way he's not sure if it's provocation.

Buy one yourself and throw it in the run.
They'll fight to the death and hopefully yours will win, then you can eat yours for supper!
If yours doesn't win buy another one that does...

Cool

I may be talking out of my **** here (usually do ED) but I was sure that there is some law that chickens etc can't be kept closer than 50 feet of a resident dwelling.

I think I know this as my wife has always wanted to keep chickens (as you do) but we have never had a garden big enough to comply with said law.

Somebody must know the answer - 10 feet from your window does sound illegal!!!

Any resident Farmer Giles types on here?

Good Luck

Puff,

can you check the deeds for the house next door. Often they specifically ban animals (goats, hens, pigs etc.) for this very reason - upsetting neighbours. Look at your own deeds if possible first, just in case they are similar.

Alternatively, record yourself saying "SHUT UP COCKRELL" or other similar word, place your speakers by an open window pointing towards your neighbours house, and play it at full blast on your stereo when the bird starts crowing!

Damn good point Boomer - our house has exactly that covenant on it, and the one that we're in the process of buying has too. There's also a clause about not doing anything that may cause annoyance to neighbours.

By jingo, I think you've got it sir.
