need a good car for >7k

okay the scoob and the FTO are both gone.
i've got 7k and need a car.
I do like the look of the Fiat Bravo HGT, decent car/engine plus 7k gets a good spec 2-3 year old with abou 30k on the clock.
But...........what else can I get, I need the following, UK car (have had imports, just too dificult to sell) decent performance, decent economy good spec and low miles (do about 20k per year)
Any idea's/thoughts welcome.

106 GTI. I still miss mine terribly despite getting the scoob. I was comfy in her and i'm 6'7". Loads of feel, control, character and quick. Far better than the fiat. Always well above it in the reviews. Just my biased opinion...... Both pugs that I have had (106 XSI, 106 GTI) have been extremely reliable too.

I'd agree that the 106GTI is a storming car and if you can get a good one for the money, go for it. I test drove one for my wife and really, really liked it to the point that had me thinking......

Yes, I'd go with the others here on both the 106 Gti and the Nissan Almera GTi. My mate had an Almera for a couple of years and had to go to a brand new RX7 to find something with a better ride. Drove it myself and the quote about the steering is spot on, however so is that about the looks. Another one to add to the equation is a Citroen Saxo VTS, same chasis, engine and gearbox as the 106, slightly lighter, hence a bit more zippy, but the build quality is slightly worse. You can get a Saxo for less than a 106 however so will be able to go slightly newer.

Yep 106 GTI is a Excellent car had one before the Scooby for 3 years never missed a beat 35 mpg lowish insurance and quicker than the golf VR6 I had before that handling is spot on so "chuckable" nice revvy engine no bottom end but when you hit 5000 RPM and it comes on cam WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE Top car not in the same league as the Scooby but just as much fun in a different way. Lovely leather inside aswell get a Solid Indigo blue one in fact you could have had mine 8 months ago !! when no one wanted to buy
Tal
Top Car wish I could have kept in aswell as the Scooby

Nissan 200SX. You should be able to get a nice N or P reg for £7K.
Touring has air/leather/CD-stacker/twin airbags/ABS/Central-locking.
200bhp/RWD means good performance, and entertaining handling when you're in the mood.
It's a brilliant car for long distance cruising, and will carry you 20,000 miles/pa in luxury. Only downside will be 25-30mpg.
Gary.
PS: A friend of mine has a 96N metallic blue non-touring (still has aircon and he's installed a great stereo) he's looking to sell. FSH, 55,000 miles, just serviced/MOT'd, new S-02's all round 6000miles ago. It's got a melon-sized knock on the rear bumper, and a scratch or two which he hasn't had sorted because he's had an S2000 on order for 6 months which comes next week, but last time I saw it, it looked pretty good. He hasn't bothered advertising it yet (lazy and too much money), and has said he'll let it go for less than 4K for minimum hassle. Email me if interested.

Nissan Almera GTI, car I had before scoob, goes well, 100% reliable, superb handling (better steering than scoob actually), should be able to get a newish one with aircon and cd player for 7k
Two draw backs:
a)they look pants...
b)they have a strut brace in the back (seriously!) so you can't carry big loads
Don't buy a Fiat, it'll only end in tears...
Cheers

Rover 620 Ti. A very Q car. 200Bhp, 60 in 7 secs and as quick as a 200SX. Nice and comfortable crusier, and a classier interior. I had one as my previous car before the scoob.
7K will get you an R/S reg one, with about 20K miles.
Just an off the wall suggestion.

Renault Megane 2.0 16v - nice looking, economical and quite quick too.
Golf GTI MK3 - tough, reliable and quite quick again
Fiat Bravo's are quite nice I agree, problems with build and reliability though :-(

I would personally go for the 200SX too. There was one in a garage near me for sale about 6 months ago. It was a red P reg with 42,000 miles on the clock for £6995. If I didn't have the Impreza I would have bought it there and then, infact I think it was only there a week before they sold it.
Don't get a Bravo (or any fiat for that matter) whatever you do. My girlfriends Fiat Punto needed a new ECU before it was even a year old.
