Sony DVD and TV
#1
DOes anyone know what is the best way to set up the following:
Sony KV32DX30 TV
Sony DAV-S300 DVD
VCR
Sky Digital
I am pretty sure that this combination must have been connected by one of you out there, but would like someone's experience of the best connecitons, cables etc. I would like the TV to automatically detect when the DVD player is started etc., so which connections should I go from/to.
Help please.
James.

You have a few options...
The TV has 3 Scarts, only one of which will do RGB. I assume the VCR has two scarts.
I would suggest
Digibox to TV-Scart 1 (Set Digibox to RGB Output)
DVD to TV-Scart 2 (Set DVD to S-Video Output)
VCR to TV-Scart 3 (Set VID to S-Vid if it can do it)
Digibox Scart 2 to VCR Scart 2 for recording Sky
If the TV is like mine (KV32FX60) you should ensure Input 3 is set to use the rear scart and not the front connectors)
The connections should all be good quality fully wired scart cables. The TV should then change to whichever device is activated last.
(Also do UHF if reqd: Aerial to Digibix to VCR to TV)
Alternatively you can daisy chain the DVD player behind the Sky box which will allow the DVD player to output in RGB format, but then you have to Record SKY via UHF and you have to turn the Sky box off to watch DVDs.

As above, but on my Sony TV I can set the output of Scart 2 to be Scart 1. This will enable you to lose the Scart lead between VCR/digibox if the amount of wires are getting out of hand.

Thats actually How I do mine as well, because the only remianing scart for the PSX was on the VCR.
I also run the UHF back into the loft and distribute it around the house. Video & Sat etc on every TV (inc PC!).
But I thought James might like to start with the basics Advanced AV connections Part II coming soon...

Thanks for the advice guys. I will get connecting this afternoon. My TV/DVD did come at a price though - delayed purchase of OZ 17" Superleggeras + SO2 PPs.
All will come to those that wait!!!!

Sony KV32FC60Z TV
Sony DVD725 DVD
Sony SLVSF90 VCR
Sony MDP850 Laserdisc
Panasonic/Sky Digibox
Digibox into Scart 1
VCR into Scart 2
Laserdisc into Scart 3 Rear
DVD Into S-Video(AV/Scart3) with SPDIF to Amp
Premium cabling all round
Leave menu defaulting S-Video to AV3, as LD rarely used and S-Video does produce 100% crystal picture, better than SCARTing it. Well argued subject, though.

Given that this DVD player has Dolby Digital 5.1, is it easy to get the standard TV broadcasts to output to the DVD speaker system? I guesss just take audio out from the tv into Audio in on the DVD?

Now its gets interesting
More option depending on exactly what connections you have (Sony UK web site is pretty cr*p)
There is no Dolby Digital from any UK TV source but you can get Dolby Pro-Logic from a lot of the channels on Sky (Sky 1 + Sports + Movies etc.) Stereo for the others and NICAM stereo from the UHF broadcasts. Which will all probably sound better through the DVD than through the TV speakers, though my sony TV does a pretty good job on its own I have to say.
If you have single Audio In, its probably best to use the audio out from TV to this audio in. This will give stereo/pro-logic everything and the sound will always match the picture..
If you have multiple audio in's then its best to go direct from the audio out on Sky and audio out on the VCR. As it is a more direct route for the sound. This will give you everything except stereo ITV. (do you need corrie through the DVD speakers ???)
