Question

It won't happen, but...

Imagine if a war with Iraq became drawn out and more troops are needed, and then the N.Korea situation turned nasty and a ground war started there too. Would the goverment issues a call up / conscription for men to fight? It happened in Vietnam and Korea for the US not too long ago.

I can not imagine what would happen to the economy if thousands on men (and probably women) were pulled out of their jobs and homes and sent into battle.

Run to the hills
F*ck combat
In the end, there won't be a ground war, it'll be nukes that win the day.

Advantages of being Diabetic.

1. Free prescriptions
2. Not eligable for the Army/Navy/Air Force, etc

Whew thats me sorted then.

Agree it would put the economy under a massive strain, but then it would probably be buggered in a war anyway.

Unhappy

If I recall correctly
Single 18-20 year olds get called up first
then
Single 20-24 year olds
then single 24-28 year olds
then single 28-34yr olds
Then married
18-20's,20-24's,28-34's
then single 34+
and lastly married 34+'s

For the purposes of call up Married means married and not living together. Conceniencious objectors can only do so on relgious grounds, where relgion is classed as CofE, Catholic, Methodist, Baptist or humanist.

I read up on ages ago during the gulf war(was a single 18-20 yr old then so it was a little more pressing)

I think the above is right, but probably not

Surely Muslims would be the last religious group to be called up in this case?

All people who are called up don't want to go -- otherwise they would have volunteered

In the last war, very few people wanted to go. They did and died because of a sense of duty and higher purpose. It was the thoughts of their families under **** tyranny that drove them to such acts of sacrifice and bravery.

In our modern day, anything goes amoral society i'm not sure this sense of duty exists anymore..

I'm fairly sure Neil's list for call up was about right. I gather the list goes right up to 45 yearr olds though.

The Army has around 40,000 part timers alone. Obviously these will be called up first. If this amount of extra troops isn't enough, we are in serious doodoo.

Remember that called up civvies will require training, equipping etc. This will take a while, so with modern warfare, by the time they are trained up it may well be too late. I reckon the west will resort to nuclear weapons before they start calling up civvies.

I'm sure it does, it's just that Iraqi and Korean troops aren't rolling across Europe at the moment. Would I fight if they were? Damn right. Would I fight in support of the US as they take on their latest cartoon bad guy? Er, no.

I forgot to mention that I saw some special ops coppers walking along St James's Park tube platform with a military Chemical Agent Monitor (CAM) last week. This is used to detect chemical agents such as nerve gas.

As ************** said, I'm glad I'm in the TA, because I'll probably have a better chance of surviving than I would working in the City, if it goes really pear shaped.

I'm happy to be off the Reserve List having completed my time. Would I go if called? Of course - that's my duty and it's no different now to when I did it full time of was doing my compulsory reserve after coming out.

Do I agree with going to war with Iraq?

No. Nor do I agree with following our alleged leadership blindly. If there were a real, on the ground threat against the UK I'd be all for going to deal with it. But there isn't and there has never been a threat to us from Iraq. Al Quaeda, yes, but not Iraq. The two are very different and are sworn enemies. Although of course Bush might just be able to drive them together if he tries real hard...

If we started taking heavy losses, then would a big mushroom would appear in the sky?

When Argentina invaded the Falklands I hate to think what would have happend, had we suffered heavy losses there. Can't remember the politics of it all, but Maggie might have had a word with Ronnie, he in turn would have passed that onto the Argies, who in turn would have had to make a decision on if they like dust or not? Can't see any other outcome possible.

I remember reading about some minister finding a bloody great crate of call up papers in a cupboard about six months after the end of the falklands war....
Would I go? If the UK was threatened in an "advancing accross europe" deal then yes.
But to increase Blairs opinion poll points?
No fookin way.

No, had we have started to suffer heavy losses (and personally, as I was there at the time I think the losses were quite heavy enough, thanks) the we would have just taken our gloves off.

The rules would have been lifted so that we would have been allowed to bomb Argentine aircraft on their runways on the mainland, sink their fleet at its moorings and so on.There was no way we were going to lose once the Task Force had set sail. But there was also no way we'd have nuked anyone over it.

Isn't this covered by stuff like the War Widows Pension? My gran used to get an extra 3 and 6 a week (or something) for getting a bit of shrapnel in her leg during the Blitz.

I've got it all sorted out. All I have to do is apply to be a police or firemen. If that fails, I'll cut off one of my little toe and claim that i'm disabled. If that fails too, I'll end up wearing a dress.
