Is it possible? Do any of you look at Scoobynet through a WAP phone? Or am I just a sad geek for even thinking it (don't answer!)
I know I saw a site that you could use to convert html so that it could be viewed on WAP devices, but even trying searches etc, I can't find it or similar.
I suppose the main limitations of current devices are bandwidth and screen size/resolution. Ideas?

WAP is dying, or at least it hasnt really taken off.
I tried it once using the SIDC wapmail i knocked together. Took me a minute and a half just to start reading my first message !
p*** poor 'fraid. Would cost £30 just to read a few posts

Bluetooth looks like the doggies bo11ox. Then again, everyone was saying that about W(CR)AP a couple of years ago.
Personally I can't wait to be able to control my stereo and fridge from my mobile phone..... mmmmmmmmm...... I wonder why. Must be the gadget freak thing again

I'm with Bajie on this one. WAP has been overhyped (especially by BT who made it look like you could surf just like on a 56K modem), but it is useful, is getting better, and there are many good services available now.
Heck, i have even set up my own (_very_ simple) site at

If you invest £25B into something, you can bet for sure they're gonna get a lot more back!
Have you seen the stats for how people [expecially our young] are using their mobile phones.
What is a Pooter?

WAP and Bluetooth are completley different things...
Like Boomer said Bluetooth is a short range wireless communication method that enables devices talk to each other. LIke Infraraed but much better.
WAP is is a mobile phone thing that covers TCP/IP and .WML (WAP markup language) that enables Mobiles to dispalay Web type pages and stuff.
My wap phone is about as reliable as a hammer made out of cheese.

Bajie,
if you are referring to my profile, a Pooter is one of those things that used to be the size of a house, and ate rectangular cards or strips of paper tape. Nowadays they are a lot smaller

GranTurismo,
I've tried looking at ScoobyNet on a Palm using Avantgo. It works but ScoobyNet isn't really a great site to look at because of all the additional stuff on the page in addition to the actual posts. They look fine on a PC of course but they just get in the way when you're scolling through them on a small screen. Many of the sites you can get through Avantgo have special sections for Avantgo so they strip out the extra stuff.

Hi there,
I'm a professional WAP developer, and WAP is crap when done the way most people have done ie take a website and convert it. WAP is great when done well, and in a task oriented way - check out Railtrack's WAP offering, it's possibly one of the best sites out there.
We develop a product that sucks in web data, prioritises it, retargets it for different appliances, one of which is WAP, and summarises it. This isn't a sales push, but if you're interested check out

Have to agree...
WAP is OK when the content is designed for it with a bit of thought. The download speed and screen size have to be considered as key to the design. - not limitations to whinge about afterwards.
All though it almost physically pains me to admit it. NatWest banking on WAP is actually quite good. To get a quick balance check is a) entirely possible and b) not too long a process. (I wish the same could be said about the www banking, but that's another discussion)
This - so far - is the only thing I have truly found useful on WAP. I can get footie scores quicker via SMS. And anything that involves lots of text is just too much hard work. The thought of reading scoobynet on WAP, I have to say doesn't appeal - even with work picking up the phone bill

Aha, all the WAP consultants and developers are starting to emerge from their hidey-holes, defending their baby
You've just gotta have the right application, where:
- its crucial that you have access to real (or near real) time data, and you don't have access to the wired Internet
- its (currently) simple information you're after, in text only (...I did see a graphic of David Beckam on the Man U WAP site just after he became a skinhead - ugh )
- you don't have to reply with much text that you have to input via crabby phone keyboards
.."three clicks and you're out" (copyright MartinM) is a good description of a good WAP app.
Scoobynet is almost certainly not a good WAP app - the posts are too long and you'd never want to reply using a WAP phone...apart perhaps, for the For Sale section, where a WAP app could allow you to e-mail one of a set of standard responses ("Sold to me, please", "Call me, I'm really interested" etc) to the 'postee'.
If anyone wants to play with the "wireless Internet", go to
