Matt

I've managed to upload my front page via IE5 using a ftp command (I found this in the BT help menu) but no graphics have uploaded. Any suggestions?

Question

Help

The situation is this:

I have a web domain pointed to my free web pages at BT Internet, I've created a front page for my site using Frontpage 2000 and can't post it as I need to send it using a ftp programme?

What does this mean? Can anyone give me any advice?

Thanks

Tim

sounds like all you need to do is transfer your homepage to your webspace. I believe that frontpage has a 'publish' feature, which should be able to transfer it for you.

Alternatively you could do it manually I guess with either the ftp supplied with windoze (click start->run, type command and ftp is available from the prompt). Another option is to get something like CuteFTP as an ftp client (available from

Remember that if you are using FP extensions you *must* use the publish command or else the extensions will not work.

As to why graphics aren't showing - check they have been transferred in binary mode.

You come to my rescue again

The problem I have is that BT Internet allow to to create your page on Frontpage but you can't publish with it. I've downloaded Cuteftp but don't understand how it works I've tried a few times but my page does not appear.

All I want at the moment is my 'under construction' page to appear when someone types in my domain name. What happens at the moment is a index page from which you select my index page.

Is that too much to ask from BT!!

Your help is, as always, gratefully received.

Tim

Hi Tim

You should be able to publish from Frontpage.

If you can't, FrontPage will resort to FTP mode automatically for you. Just use "open web" and then type in your "www.whatever/" and then you can cut and paste between your hard drive and the newly opened web. Frontpage then FTP's the files automatically.

In order to get your "under construction" page to appear, it needs to be named, usually, "index.html". When someone then types in your web address the web server automatically shows the index page.

I've tried to do as you have suggested but I can't make it work. Can you explain it again in even easier English.

Thanks

Tim

Hi Tim,

Here's a quick screen shot with what you need to put into the Connection Settings for CuteFTP (these settings work for me to upload files to the BT Internet server).

Once connected, the right hand 'pane' should show you are in /pub.

From the left pane, drag the files you want on the site into the right pane. The main index file should be called index.html (check it's all in lowercase).

Does this help?

Chris.

Tim,

bear in mind that some people consider CuteFTP as "spyware". This means that it can send information over the internet to third parties without you knowing. What that information is depends on the spyware - CuteFTP uses Aureate (see their web-site at

Isn't every day a school day? I never knew CuteFTP was on the Aureate list.

I'll presume the registered version of CuteFTP doesn't include the Spyware junk as advert.dll doesn't exist on my PC and the GRC Opt-Out tool found nothing.

Boomer, definately! In fact, I'm just about to upload a new version to that link I sent you.

Chris.

All I want to do is start a web site

Boomer

I've run the checks and all is OK. Thanks for pointing it out.

Chris

I've done as you have said and it connected OK. I dragged my index.html file over and it did something in the top window but it still doesn't work. I must be doing something wrong

Is there anything else I've missed?

Thanks for all your help.

Tim
(hopeing to get it working sometime this year )

Sucess

If you go to my web site it now goes straight to my home page.

I did it in the end using the ftp option on IE5. Just drag and click from My Documents. Making sure that I had named the index file correctly and also copying over the image file as well *doh*

Thanks for all your help.

Tim
