Digital Camera?
#1
Looking for a digital camera. A friend has a Sony DSC-S50 Digital Camera, and it seems quite good.
Any others worth looking at (Cheaper than that if possible)?
Mike.

Mike,
I bought the Sony DSC-S70 last week for £550. It's the S50's big brother, and so far it's been great. I decided to go for 3 megapixels rather than 2 as I want it to last for a couple of decades and the S70 should do the trick.
I was amused when looking around various Sony showrooms to note that as well as the S70 (Volvo I believe) they also have models called the P1 and RB5 (a mini hifi).

Wotcha Mike
I bought the Kodak DC215, and you've seen the results . I got it in the states at Staples, of all places for $180 (!). They got the price very wrong when doing a price match.
You should be able to get one for about 200 quid now. Uses Compact Flash memory, so if you've got any memory for a Psion 5 handy, you can use it in both.
Nick.

I went through this over Christmas, too many to choose from, specifications fairly similar, so boils down to price!!!
I bought a Minolta Dimáge 2300. It cost £269.00 from Bentalls in Kingston Upon Thames (They also offer 5 year extended guarantee including accidental damage for £69)
Jessops, and various places on line were also offering it for about £270.
2.3 Megapixels, 8Mb CompactFlash card, USB connection to PC/Mac, Software Windows 95/98/2000 compatible (needed it to work with 2000), Small & light (114 x 65 x 40mm - 210g) and Up to 1,792 x 1,200 pixels.

Hi Mike.
I brought a Canon Digital Ixus from Dixons duty-free at Gatwick about four or five months ago. Jessops are doing it for £429 now. I've brought a couple more flash cards - 10MB and 48MB - and a second re-chargeable battery. 48MB is enough space for around 70 photos at high res.

The Ixus is great as is the DC280. Picture quality on the Ixus is better from my experience using both. Mike what are you going to be using the camera for. you might not need the higher picture quality of some of the more expensive cameras.
If you are looking for something cheaper the Kodak DC215 was made end of line about 4 months ago but there are still quite a few around and you should be able to get this for under £200 ex VAT.
Just avoid anyhting by a no name for under £200 as you really pay for what you get.

chiark,
does your DC215 go through batteries like crazy?
mate of mine's got one and although it produces nice results, he goes through a set of alkaline batteries for about 30 shots!!! and that's trying not to use the display - is this right?
This in itself is enough to put me off. :-(
I'd buy one otherwise.
Cheers

It's mainly to take pictures of products to use on the web site, the one I have now (Casio QV 5000 SX) Eats a set of NimH batteries in around 15 minutes!!!! Focus is also not working cvorrectly which is currently the main problem!!!!!
Thanks for the replies.
