Is there anything at all we can do about all these taxes we have to pay. It is supposed to be a democracy but the people really are powerless to do anything about it.

Taxes I can think of are:

Income Tax
VAT on nearly everything
Road Tax
Tax on Petrol
Council Tax
Car Tax on new car purchases
Tax on Car Insurance
Tax on House Insurance
National Insurance (sort of a tax)
Arrival/Departure Tax on flying
Stamp Duty on House Purchases
Death Duty
Tax on interest gained
Taxes on Pensionable Income
Taxes on anything you sell at a profit on certain things, such as shares etc

I am sure there are other forms of tax that people will add to this list, but what can we do about it? Surely some of these taxes should be dropped? Also when a government cannot run a country properly, they are all to eager to blame everyone else except themselves. Their answer is to increase or think of new taxes and it is the general public that lose out by paying out more yet again.

Is there nothing we can do or are the public really that powerless?

same old story - we should scrap the NHS and all unemployement benefits like they did in New York. Strangely enough everybody soon started finding work. They had a scheme in place to even help single parents back into work rather than having them scrounge off the state..

When have you ever seen a tax being dropped because its not relevant anymore (TV license anyone?). Whatever Labour brings in, the Tory's or Lib-Dems will either increase or live with. No new tax is popular and if it can be accredited to another party all the better.

We are the 2nd most taxed country in Europe (after Germany) at 29% of GDP I think. France are lowest at 22%.
When it comes to electioneering people only really quote Income tax and say we are one of the lowest in europe. The whole tax burden tells a different story!

Add the list corporation tax etc.

What is Death Duty BTW???
