Thumbs up

Dvd player has started to play up, and I've been waiting for an excuse to buy a surround sound system upto £500. Any recommendations, or makes to keep away from?

Sony DAV-S550 would be a good place to start looking at that sort of price. If you want to stick to £500 rigidly remember to allow about an extra £100 for cables and stands and stuff.

Just been looking at the Pioneer NS-DV77. Listened to the NS-DV88 yesterday, and the quality is fantastic. These are in the shops at £550 but the internet price is between £439 and £460 incl VAT and delivery. One of the sites also offered free stands for the speakers. Any one have this model?

I've just ordered a sony DAV-S550 after a looking at similar systems. It has come very high in all the reviews I've read. You can buy it for £450 at either empiredirect.co.uk or unbeatable.co.uk. Which is good because it's between £540 and £600 in the shops.

Thanks for the offer Rich, but I really want a new one.
I've not seen the Sony, so I'll have a look at the spec on the web.

I've got the DV 77 and think it's a top piece of kit. A mate has the 55 and he's very impressed with that as well. I think that both sound and picture are excellent and Vice City played through the setup is outstanding!

The only thing you might want to keep in mind is that you can't hack it with a code like most machines. Apparently all Pioneers have to be chipped to play multi region - a fact that I found out after purchasing from John Lewis (bugger!). Now if anyone can tell me that this is cobblers I will be eternally grateful as I'm fed up of having to watch the MASH discs on the old Wharfedale upstairs.

Cheers,

John

John,
All the sites that I have seen the DV 77 and DV 88 for sale are all stating this is a Multi Regional machine. I have only seen one site where you are given the option to upgrade to Multi Region for an extra £10.
Now just need to decide on the colour.
Wood effect on the DV 88 or silver on the DV 77. I've seen the DV 88 for sale including speaker stands for £439 which I thought was an excellent price for this. The cheapest I've seen the DV 77 is £455.

Just bought the Pioneer NS-DV77 from LE Concepts. They will beat any advertised quote, and they even threw me in a set of speaker stands. The whole package incl delivery was £450 and is set up as multi regional.
Get delivery tomorrow, so can't wait.
