I have a Garmin EMAP.
It's pocket size and I use it in the car, on the bike (pedal powered) and on the bike (motor powered). Cost about £180 and is very accurate with downloadable maps (although default map covers the world to a reasonable level of detail).
One of the best toys I've ever bought, it's great for recording where you have been as well, which I find really useful on the mountainbike when I want to log good routes.
Also the best way I know of accurately(fairly) calibrating your speedo, as it's accurate to 22ft.

It will do streetmaps (I have UK and Europe maps loaded), even my little road on my estate is on it.
If you want it to prompt you with the route you have to enter a route into it first (no big deal as you can get this from the AA website or similar). Personally I'm not a big fan of the prompt type, I usually head in the direction of the place I am going then use it to 'zoom' in and find wherever I am going.
You can get extra RAM modules (I have a 128MB unit), but to be honest I'm only using about 30MB, so I think I over estimated my requirements.
Garmin also do a dashmounted unit that prompts you. Dixons sell it (if you want to see one), but they are very expensive from there, so I would suggest looking here http://www.adventureshop.co.uk/

If you want 'the arrow', try this one:-

or this one if you want voice as well and colour:-

If you are going down the streetpilot 111 route (£1100) you would be better off buying something like an ipaq with sat nav unit which has spoken directions, arrow direction and a scalable map display which goes down to 100ft detail. Cost is about £1000 but you get the benifit of an hand held pc as well, I have been using one for work (plumber) and all i have to do is put the house number and street and it will take me to the door which is brill when looking for house no.s in the dark.It also comes with an 128meg card with the whole of the uk installed so no map areas need to be downloaded.

Garmin GPSV is the lowest price unit that gives directions, although they are on the screen rather than spoken. Excellent bit of kit. Sits nice on the dash and portable enough to fit a pushbike or to carry too. About £400 so much cheaper than the streetpilot. Try www.exportech.co.uk for a demon deal.

If you just want to track your position on a map, instead of being guided by arrows or voice to your destination, a cheap program would be Oziexplorer, (free demo program available over the net, full version for a pretty reasonable price). Scan in your own map, calibrate them, plug in any compatible gps unit and you are in business. Garmin gps units also come with an optional power adapter that can also run your labtop from the car cig lighter. We don't have digitised maps of the country available on CD-rom here, so have to scan in our own maps whereas for UK, ready made programs down to street level are easily available.
