Hi All

Some of you may know that I own a Lancia integrale and recently I had a major engine re-build done. After 280 miles of the running in period the cambelt snapped while I was joining the M25 from the M4 I wasn't going fast and the engine stopped straight away. This happened about 6 weeks ago but the first chance I had to look at the car in daylight was friday. I opened the bonnet to put the battery back on it ready to tow it to my garage and had a look at the cambelt that is still on the engine (but snapped obviously) The belt that has snapped was not the new belt that I supplied the guy with but looks like my old cambelt that was on the engine when the belt jumped and destroyed and internals What can I do now? The car has been of the road for 18 months now (all but doing 280 miles ) and I want it back on the road. Has anyone any idea what I can do now?

Thanks in advance
Paul

When I first called the guy who re-built it he said "what do you want me to do about it?" he then told me that cambelts can snap at anytime and to speak to the supplier of the new cambelt. He must have been hoping that when the belt snapped it was thrown off of the engine like you would expect. Basically the guy doesn't want to know and stupidly I paid him in cash He had the car for 5 months to do the job too

Would at least expect a goodwill gesture to made, it won't do his reputation any good otherwise. Don't see that you can persue it legally as you have no proof of the work being carried out.
Where was the work carried out ?

I have tried speaking to the guy but he gets very aggressive with me (and my friend who is a so called mate of his ) when ever this is mentioned Is it work paying another garage to do another assessment on it to determine why the belt snapped? I have reciepts for parts but the guy never gave me a labour reciept (which also p!ssed me off ) but he is a friend of a friend

If he won't accept any blame now & you've got no legal avenues given the lack of documentation, then no matter what an assessment finds he'll just dispute it & it'll cost you more money.
Do you know the extent of the damge ?
Might be worth calling his bluff with a legal letter to see if it has any effect.

I don't know the extent of the damage because I don't want to take it apart until something has been agreed A friend advised me to try sending a letter too I may call the guy in a minute and see what he has to say for himself

Exclamation

Paul,

No offence to anyone on here, but speak to a solicitor.

You may well have a case against this bloke - after all, you supplied him with a new cambelt which he then chose not to use, so you may have a case of negligence.

FFS, get some proper advice and don't rely on the goodnatured but often wrong advice and opinions generally posted on this BSS.

Hope you get it sorted mate
