The Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) have just published their latest (quarterly) report.
The train operators got SEVEN HUNDRED AND SIXTY MILLION POUNDS in subsidies (i.e. paid for by you and me the tax payer) at the same time as complaints rose by 23%!!!
These subsidies amount to 3.6p per kilometre or around five pence per mile.
Imagine if you, as a car driver, got five pence per mile, paid for by the government (er, us) for driving around????
It wouldn't be quite so bad if train fares were competitive and the service was good - but you can typically drive (alone) quicker and cheaper that the railways.
Compare how much tax the average (let alone Scooby) motorist pays per year, for a flexible, personal, comfortable, door-to-door transport system - with the subsidised rail network???
Can anyone explain why the railways (which theoretically should be much more efficient than cars) are failing miserably????

OK whats the alternative then, tarmac the country ? Current rail infrastucure is suffering from years of underfunding under the Conservative and previous Labour Government. Its not the trains that are sucking the money dry, look elsewhere BNFL ,TRIDENT,sending everyone and their Dog to Uni blah blah blah.

"tarmac the country ?"
Well we have a long way to go...
See http://www.abd.org.uk/green_and_pleasant_land.htm
"years of underfunding"
...so, you are saying that the railways are a charity that we must pay for - whether of not we use them?
"BNFL" ...or rather British Energy?
Arghhh, don't start me on that So the Government (er, us) bail them out to the tune of several hundred million pounds, BE still make a massive loss, and the government are still liable to the multi-BILLION pound cleanup operation??
Please,
lets stick to trains - in case i burst a blood vessel

Scrap passenger trains, use it for freight, get as many lorries of the road as possible, free it up for cars. Seems like a good idea to me anyway.
