Question

Is it possible to send and recieve emails without owning a PC?
My mother in law would like email access and maybe internet. They do not have a huge amount of spare cash to afford subscriptions. I know that some cable operators offer email or a very restricted 'web access'. I think a pc would be too complicated. Your help would be appreciated.

There's the Amstrad E-m@iler thing too. I think the calls are expensive though. I think NTL do broadband through the TV -- that sounds like a decent option.

If she just wants occasional access, just buy a cheap 2nd hand PC and find an ISP that is no subscription (i.e. 0845 calls) and make sure he only uses it off-peak. Unmetered or Broadband is only for the medium - heavy users.

*cough* Luna *cough*

We've had an Amstrad Emailer for 2 years now, and it's a very handy solution. My wife doesn't like PCs/technology, so I handle most of the mail on my laptop, and she has her mail redirected to the emailer. It means she can send/receive mail at any time without the hassle of firing up the PC, etc. It's an ideal solution for us.

It's not the cheapest solution in the world (12p for each send/receive, IIRC), but with the low volume of email she sends/receives it's not too bad - especially as there's a facility to store up several emails and send them in one go.

For somebody like a gran/mum/etc. who doesn't want to have the hassle of maintaining a PC, I'd say it's an ideal solution.

The newer ones can do basic web-surfing too, but that is expensive.

NTL offers a web service to certain sites, which include Yahoo and other web-based email services.

Cool

Oh, and BTW, I saw a Dixons ad in the paper today - seems they're selling the eMailer for £49.99 - half price.
