Best online ad method??

I'd imagine those little boxes you see at the side when you do a search on a product on something like google, got no idea how much it costs to get them at/close to the top though.

rik,
Tricky subject, guess it depends what you are selling / how widespread its appeal is. Ive used google ad-words (boxes on the right) which is quite good cos you only pay for click-throughs not page impressions although wasnt effective for me. Affiliations work well for a lot of people (mutual banner links and all that), guess you just gotta see what people's experiences are.

It's a specialist house music store selling vinyl/dj supplies.
How much does Google Ad Words cost? I've signed up for it, but I can't really understand the pricing structure.
It estimated a £3.00 cost per click price, does this mean it will cost me £3.00 for every! customer??
50 customers a day click through for 31 days = £4650 a month!!
Surely this can't be correct - can it?

Hi Rik
I thought about the google boxes. You have to bid a click price to get shown and this will depend on what other people are already paying.
You then get charged this, to your credit card, per click. If some chinese kid clicked your box 100 times, you get billed.
You can set a limit on your monthly spend and when this is exhausted, your ad disappears.

Email me offline - Tell me what ya want. We do Flash versions as well as .gif. I'll get a quote for you.
Might be an idea to figure out where it's gunna be shown first, though...Try emailing Simon/Webmaster of Scoobynet for an idea of costs for displaying banners.
Good luck with everything, anyway

Viral marketing - most effective. You need to create something like the ghost things that go around, or any of the other things that fly around email.
I used to sell Google Ad Words for a living - bloody complicated they are

DW - What's your opinion on flash/flat advertising pop-ups?
Would you provide them if the client paid for them, or do you have "moral" objections?
Squizz.

Surely since it's so specialised, a better way to start would be to find a couple of the more popular DJ BBSes out there (there must be loads) and advertise on them? It'll be cheaper than something generic like google, but you'll get a better hit ratio of customers 'cos you'll be getting the ads up in front of your target audience, instead of joe public on google.

Good point. Anyone know of any decent DJ/house music forums?
DreamWeaver - what would the est. monthly cost be for a half decent house music ad on Google's Ad Words?

www.djcentral.com might be a good place to start. Astraboy will know some too.

Squizz - from my own personal stand point I dont like them - I presume you mean the banner ads that fold down when you hover/click on them?
From a client point of view, if a client asks for something, then I will always offer them pros and cons and a final choice. It is not for me to say whether a client should have something or not. I can just advise on the good/bad points. Dont like design firms etc that wont do things due to moral standings - the customer is always right
Rik - sorry mate, been over a year since now and prices will have changed dramatically. I know some folk who have done well of them though.
Best advice is as above - visit many music BBS's and forums and get yourself around them - it will take time to build up though - you cant just go in spamming

From a personal perspective the only sites I've clicked on banners on are this one and the gtr forums... And I've never bought anything from either! Never clicked banners elsewhere (even **** ), and tend to buy things based on a combination recommendations and price (where it something widely available), or very a search engine's standard links (where it is less easy to find)...

IMHO, PPC is the only way to go for a decent ROI (aargh - too many TLAs!) but you need to use a management tool alongside the providers. Feel free to email me if you'd like to chat in detail.
Cheers
