Raks,

Have you spoken to your Uni about the TCS scheme? Not many students/grads seem to have heard of it (poor marketing by the Universities) but it is basically a sceme whereby a business will take on a graduate straight from Uni on a 2 year placement. As far as I can remember, the business pays the University (and can top up the graduate if so inclined!)for the grad and any related help that the Uni can offer the business.

It is intended to help graduates get experience in the real world, and if the graduate and employer hit it off, its a way in to a full time career.

It is certainly a good idea for businesses. It means that they can get the benefit of a graduates education and the related academic help from the system, without paying huge salaries. It also gets the graduate into business through the back door.

Not sure if would be any good in your industry. Probably more for engineering type boffs.

Anyway, hope it helps.

Which industry are you looking to go into, or aren't you fussy?

Ooooopppsss!!

Doh! Forgot that bit!! I'm currently finishing up a 4yr degree in Accounting and Finance in London. 4yrs as I spent 6 months abroad as an extension to my degree. Added that needed international flavour to it.

Would really like to get into Finance though. Much rather than Accounting!!

Thanks in advance for people's replies!

Thumbs up

Sainsburys in Hayes (Middx) have a few jobs going for cashiers.

Don't be picky in times of tough economic conditions.

Try your univerity careers office - they are bound to have one. IIRC, there is a nationwide publication that they will have with listing of companies with graduate recruitment schemes.

Unlucky Raks, you couldn't have picked a worse time. 20 - 25,000 cuts in the City so far this year and you can bet there'll be more before Christmas. Lot's of Banks are cutting their Grad schemes because there are cheaper experienced staff on the market. CSFB sent all their grads home this year on half pay for the year with the message do something useful.

Sorry Mate.

Raks,

Unless you are walking away with a first you have virtually no chance. I am a manager in an ops area of a medium size investment bank. Our ops grad scheme got canned this week. CSFB laid off 10% of their staff last week, Morgan Stanley 10% the week before, JP Morgan Chase and Citi the same two weeks back, Bear Sterns had a lay off last week. Pay rises and bonuses are a thing of the past.

I know someone mentioned Sainsbury's earlier, and in all honesty you need to look at areas where the businesses have not yet started contracting and get in fast while everyone else is still fooled into thinking that the City is THE place to work.

Sorry to bear such bad news.

My advice would be don't go to Uni in the first place, but it's a bit late now.

Try the agencies in your local city centre?

Rik,

one issue.... employers are resistent to take you on as they pay 1.5 times more cos your from an agency.

also, most of those jobs are temp only.

Cheers though

employers in Banking will take most of their recruits through agencies, (apart from grads on grad scheme) It saves them wading through a pile of ****.

Give the banking a miss and re-train as a plumber, Always in demand, 40-50k per year on average as well.

Raks

I graduated last year also on an accountancy course. Since graduating ive been looking for a finance job in the City and have had no luck. The banking market is just c**p. Therefore, i went into accounting and found a decent job sraight away.

Maybe worth getting into an accountancy practice and gaining as much finance experience as possible, then consider looking for a job in banking later.

Raks....I seriously think that if anyone could have helped you, they would have by now...

There have been a couple of suggestions made and you need to follow them. If not start low somewhere else, even the Sainsbury's option so that at least you have a job while looking for your ideal one.
