"Espedair Street" by Iain Banks and "Stupid White Men" by Michael Moore.

Espedair Street is an absolute modern-day classic; I've read it several times, but hadn't done so for perhaps a year. Nothing IB's done before or since (except, perhaps, The Crow Road) measures up.

Edited to say that I've recently started "No Logo" by Naomi Klein and was not impressed. Avoid, unless you're a greener-than-green,(tie) dyed in the wool, eco-****. I mean, can nobody see the irony of an anti-advertising, anti-marketing book ... being the subject of it;s own marketing campaign?

Question

What book are you reading at present? (Not like, right now)

I am reading The Black House by Stephen King and Peter Straub. Very good, but extremely dark.

How can you read so many? Surely all the stories get tangled?

I do love reading, I think women are better at novels than men due to having a better imagination. (Not an invitiation for remarks). Men like to read fact, not fiction.

I went to bed at 9.00 pm last night and read for over an hour. Better than watching the crap on TV I think.

"Life of Pi" by Yann Martel, (somewhat surreal IMHO), and "The Technical Facts of the Vintage Bentley" (a cross between a Haynes manual and a work of fiction in that the errors and omissions are frightening).

On a more serious note, I think that you are spot on about blokes liking technical stuff, probably to do with us liking facts rather than emotional opinions.

Clarebabes: Have you read the forerunner to that one, "The Talisman"? It's one of my all-time faves. When I bought my copy, it had a sticker saying "soon to be released on video". Apparently, it never has been though. Shame.
I really love the "adventure" type books by Stephen King, if you haven't already, I'd recommend "The Stand" (uncut version), "It", and "Through the eyes of the Dragon".

I have never read a Stephen King book in my life til now, though I will from now on. I usually read Dean Koontz, Patricia Cornwell, Ruth Rendell and Minette Walters etc....

I am 30 years old. I have one child and a boyfriend. There was nothing on TV and I didn't fancy getting "intimate"

I'm currently reading "Nightshift" by Stephen King, it's a collection of his early short stories, a couple of which became films (Trucks which beame maximum Overdrive) or were later re-worked and became books (Jerusalems Lot).

His writing has matured a lot since then, but very interesting all the same. I think I know have about 30 SK books, usually bought second hand.

Could you find out for me please? I enjoy reading dragon books, I have run out of authors though!!!

I tend to enjoy science fiction, fantasy, horror. I normally have no time for normal fiction as it bores me apart from authors like Robin Cook and Dick Francis.

Most of my books are packed away in storage ready for me to move, so I cannot remember which authors I have lots of books of. Brian Lumley style authors would be of interest to me......

The perfect storm at the mo, its not like the film at all, much better, written very much as a factual account of what happened.

Don't like actually seeing films of books I've read. No film can replace the narrative for description like a book does. I read the lost world and then saw the film - not good at all by comparison.

I think women are better at novels than men due to having a better imagination.
How can you possibly say that on this BBS clare?

I shall see how successful I am when I finally finish writing my novel - funnily enough it is of the fantasy/horror genre

MP, any suggestions for me? Whose style is Michael Moorecock similar to?

Clarebabes: if you like Minette Walters, (I do too), also try Val McDermid: she wrote the "Wire in the Blood" that's being done on telly at the mo, and her "A Suitable Place for Execution" was one of the most thought provoking books I've ever read, especially in light of the recent death of Myra Hindley. Be careful though, as she also writes about a Manchester P.I., and those books are comparatively lightweight.

Can't belive i set up a corner and left it!

Morcock, hmmm, very serios syuff, kinda like a fantasy version of early Harry Harrison stuff. Was breifly a member of Hawkwind, as a narrator & writer after they wrote an albulm about one of his series of books. Easist stuff to get into are the Chronicles of the Albino Prince (Elric). Most of his books are based on the the idea of an 'Eternal Champion', with lots of elemental sorcery etc.
