Quite possibly Luke...

What would you have us do? Beckham's lawyers have said that they will start actions against anyone who publishes this story.

Despite all our disclaimers saying that comments are those of the author, we can still be culpable by "publishing" these sort of things. There are precedents, admittedly of a slightly different nature, but we cannot afford to be a test case as that would be the end of scoobynet financially.

Note these are my opinions and interpretations. Ultimately the buck stops with Simon, and we're just trying to make scoobynet run and continue to run.

Hopefully you can see where we're coming from on this.

Nick.

Thumbs down

Some of the moderators appear to be under delusions that Beckham's lawyers will be coming after Scoobynet in order to sue us for publicly discussing some unfounded allegations about the man.

Unfortunately, if the mods had read the articles in the news about the rumours properly, they'd have seen that the spokeswoman for Beckham simply said they would be considering suing for defamation the sites who originated the gossip.

It's the usual lack of moderation common sense kicking in again, just like the Barrymoore and Leslie stories.

I quote Beacon FM news this morning after they mentioned about stories circulating on the 'Net.

"Our lawyers have told us that we cannot tell you what the rumours are"

If a major media group decides to keep stum, that sounds sensible practise to follow.

So how come nobody's piled in and deleted my 'donkey-marshmallow-sex' thread yet?

It's just trumped up self-importance to delete posts like this. There is no way in this world that Beckham would ever bother suing SN for this rubbish. The very worst that could happen is that SN might be contacted and asked to remove the rumours - but it's hardly likely that SN will be the first target to be attacked. And if you actually read the content of my thread, there isn't actually any allegations made. Asking whether a rumour is true is totally different to claiming it is true...

If I ask whether the Queen acted improperly by lying to the court about her involvement in the Peter Burrell case, would that get censored? It's no different, really.

Fair enough, blame me.

Scoobynet is supposed to exist for Subaru enthusiasts primarily as a resource for the cars.

Whether were delusioned or not is up for debate and one that I don't really want to get into. I can accept the argument that it's foolish for us to even think we'd be on anyone's radar, legally speaking, however I personally think it's better for us to avoid any threat by simply vapeing such threads.

Ultimately, the only person with any "risk" is Simon. The moderators try to act by showing good judgement to ensure that scoobynet continues to be the success that it already is.

Sometimes we do very much err on the side of caution, but that's with the absolute best intentions.

If you want to be the test case, go for it. It's something that I'd rather scoobynet was not involved with...

Cheers,
Nick.

Question

Not blaming you, per se, just wondering.

I actually have a specific question to ask - perhaps Simon might want to answer this: how many times has SN been actually threatened with legal action over content on the BBS. And I don't just mean somebody mouthing off that they were going to sue Simon/SN/etc, but actual involvement of solicitors firing warning letters off and so on?

Just interested to know if it's actually happened yet/before?

It has definitely happened. I think Simon's the only person who can answer that one - dunno if he's around... Will have a word as I'm interested in that one too.

Mark

I deleted the thread in the best interests of ScoobyNet after reading this in the Telegraph this morning:

"His spokesman warned that repeating the allegation could result in legal action"

I feel it is fairly unlikely they would come after scoobynet but we're being cautious, that's all.

I support the moderators on this one. Although it's highly unlikely any legal action would be taken, why risk it?

Anyone got a photo of the "third party" in this whole thing? I'd be interested to see what all the fuss is about?
