Anyone own a Sony Aibo 210?

As pictured here:

If you have, are they good? what problems do they cause? anything negative about them?

As I am thinking of getting one.

Money to burn then!!!

My mate got one, it was hilarious and cool for about 2 weeks ....now it sits in his study with all his other unused gadets! - They are superb fun though, the bloody thing knows where you are!

It even gets arsey if you dont play with it, and tired as the battery runs low - I think with an optional wall power pack it can charge itself up!!! - AI here we come!!

He paid £950 for his, a bit excessive but a very, very cooool thing to have!!!

cool not looking to purchase it yet though.

Basically my fiancee and I are thinking about treating ourselves when we purchase a house

Apparantly you can get a docking charger for it, but you have to put it on - not automatic

Waht an age we live in, when you and your other half get a new house you can buy a cyber pet!

Seriously though, if you can afford one you have to get one - these things are absolutely unbelievable!!!

Some people <shakes head in disbelief>

£900 for a plastic toy FFS!! If you have a new house, why not spend the money on doing the garden up, or buying lots of nice furniture, or a big **** off TV

I had one for a few weeks, kinda nifty if it floats your boat.

It will play football, understands many verbal commands, exhibits "emotions" (boredom, anger, upset etc) it's touch + pressure sensitive on various pads around it's "body", so it knows if it's being stroked or hit.

It's got stereo mics, so it'll tilt it's head towards you if you talk at it..

It's got funky gyros that enable it to balance, pick itself up etc. It can idenfity edges of stairs etc so it doesn't fall off anything.

Seeing a robot follow the path of a ball across a room, walk up to it, kick it, track the ***** motion, go over and kick it again is rather cool.

As an example of technology it's great, as a toy it's rather sad.

I managed to sell mine for what I paid for it as there were long waiting lists at the time.

NOS,

If you don't have anything productive or useful to add to a thread, then don't post. Keep posting up crap like that and it will keep getting deleted.

it does sound rather good! The only thing is that I wanted to leave it on all the time, and let it charge itself up automatically. But after reading the faq on the aibo this can't be done. Just seems like a shame to turn it off after an hour and a half!

christian, you could get a very nice real dog for that sort of cash, maybe a toy poodle or something like that(just kidding)

but what ever you do dont let your other half talk you in to getting a cat!

they are smelly nasty dirty little things!

(all posts i have made are just a bit of fun, dont take it to heart mate )

I have been looking at getting a 220 (the robotic looking one)..

They look fantastic! the new software upgrade that is pending next year should mean face-recognition and the ability to self-charge the little critter.

even better it has a 802.11b wireless lan card, so you can access it over a web browser.cool!

I promised myself that I would not buy anything else extra over the next few months, but I can really see myself forking out a load-a-dosh for one of these!

Much better than a cat or dog IMHO - you can turn the bloody thing off, and you can re-programe it with a better personality if you want to!

I used to work for Sony and had a bit of time to play with all three variants. Remember it is basically a 'toy'..... very expensive one mind... and it was great fun at first but will unlimately become a £1000 paper weight. If you've got the money spare go for it but you WILL get bored of it.

Tony.
