It's a first car and needs to be reliable, cheap to run, but more importantly, no more than 2-3 years old.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Such a step down as it probably would be for you Cem (assuming it is for you), get a Nissan Micra. Cheap to run and insure, my missus old one never had a problem, no problem in it from the public, and you should be able to pick one up for about your asking price.....
OK you may look like Noddy in it, but who cares?

Anything that age in that price range will probably be high mileage. You would be looking at (I've just been looking at auto trader!!) Perodua Nippa 850, Kia Pride, Suzuki Alto, Fiat Seicento, Cinquecento and possibly a Corsa. If you go a bit older, you could get a real bargain.

I agree the Ka is the car to get, but not for £3k unless it's got high miles and the base model!
My girlfriend bought a year old one with lots of lovely bits on it for a more than £3k mind! The Ka is a great runaround while I'm tinkering with the Golf.
Group 2 insurance as well, which is a bonus! Although the 1.3 lire engine is not!!

Go to some of the auctions, you can get some bargains there (yes, i know you can get some dodgy ones as well). But i heard recently that a jap import T reg yaris went for 2.5K!
