If you buy a private plate on a car without an MOT, can you still use the plate??
I just read that unless you get the car MOT'ed its no use at all??

so..lets get this straight.... if you buy a car that doesnt have a current MOT, you want to know if you can "use the plate" off it?
I assume you mean "use it on another vehicle" ? If so then I cant see any reason why not. Assuming you have the certificate of ownership for the private plate you can transfer it to any vehicle you like. As far as I know the issue of MOT doesnt come into it. If you DONT have the certificate for the private plate then it doesnt belong to you as such, and you cant use it on anything unless you buy it first.
Have I mis-understood the question?

MOT bit is interesting...Its a DOT form isnt it? Not DVLA... Hmmm....
Im interested to know the answer to this one. Never crossed my mind you might not be able to do it. Would it be the same with tax and insurance then? And what would happen with write offs that are in compounds for months that have private plates on ??

rAZZ,
When I wrote my car off I had to get a letter from the insurance saying they did not want the plate.. then send that with the transfer documents to DVLA and await the new reg document (V5) with an age related plate for the written off car.. and also received the retension certificate for the private plate..
then sent V5 to insurance to get pay out..
I believe the issue with the MOT was to do with trying not to fake MOT certificates but I cannot recall why.. not sure if the idea has been scrapped or not.. see the DVLA site I linked to above.

Having just transferred my plate from my old car to my new one- they did request MOT certificates for both the donor and recipiant vehicles....
As far as i am aware it has to be MOT'd to have the plate transferred from it.

Find a "friendly" Guy who runs an MOT station.. and will give you an MOT. i know people who have done it this way, but make sure the old car dissapears quickly before anyone sees it !
