Name that word

Jason: Say a software package has a plug-in mechanism. You'd call it extensible, right? So plug-in is the bit you 'add'.
Edited to add - can't be too careful these days

Yes, there is. Extension or protrusion, as inferred from the dictionary definition. Since protrusion is clearly not appropriate, the word you want is extension - coincidentally the noun I've always used in my software engineering career, whenever talking about the object that is added to an extensible system.
Extendable and Extension were two of a kind and lived a happy life in their suburban 2-up 2-down - in stark contrast to their lonely next-door neighbour Extensible. Extensible had always lived on his own and spent all of his income on 'performance exhausts' and computer games, and vented his frustrations arguing that black was white on bulletin boards. The only thing that kept him going was his fascination with his next-door neighbour's wife, Extension. Extendable and Extension were well aware of his strange behaviour around her but they felt sorry for him so were always civil and even invited him around for mulled wine at Christmas.
So, you see Mark, although Extensible and Extension do have a relationship of sorts - one could hardly call it 'proper'.
P.S. Yes - I am bored

Maybe this particular extensible was an expandable trapped inside an extensible body, but due to the hardware/software divide imposed by society it just couldn't admit to its feelings.
Either that or it had a bad extension moment in the past.

If something's extensible, and you go ahead and do your extensiblizing (sic), what is the bit called that you add to the original? I thought extensis first but I don't think it is.

You're wrong, Mr Lanng. Since the defn for 'extensible' is Capable of being extended or protruded, then the bit you add on is clearly an extension. I'd suggest protusion, but it's not appropriate and would generate far too many innuendos.

Cos extensible has a particular meaning in software engineering - not to worry - calling it extension
