Question

Is there any way of recovering pictures after they have been wiped by formatting the CF card?

Try http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/
for some software that might help you freee trial $29 for the full version.

Yes, there are ways providing you have a way of reading the card on your PC. DO NOT take any more photos using that card!

I used Digital Image Recovery, which is Freeware. WOrks well. The author has now made later versions commercial, but the freeware one works if you can find it.

This link should work, if you can't get it, mail me.

cheers,

Nick.

Ah, if you're using the camera's reader you might not be quite as fruitful but it's worth a try all the same.

That Photorescue stuff does work in many cases but you will need a card reader I think. If it won't work there are data recovery people out there at a price, do a google search. Format does not wipe the card, just like deleting files from a HD it removes the pointers to the files. If you take more photos the files will be overwritten and then they are gone.
It all depends how important they are to you.
All my photos go straight to the HD, copied to a second HD and then saved to a CD-rw.
The only files you ever lose permanently are the important ones, yet another example of Fetridges law of maximum cussedness.

Thanks everyone, & especially chiark.

The use of a card reader does seem to be the key, ordered one today. Looks like I will only be taking the 16mb card to the motorshow tomorrow for pics of the luverly ladies... er ... cars.

Success! The card reader & the free software via chiark did the trick.

(Meanwhile, lots of very low resolution pics from the motorshow)

Thanks again, everyone.
