Eyesight requirements for Armed Forces / Emergency Services

Does anyone have any information on what level of eyesight you must have to join the armed forces or emergency services?
Does anyone know if laser-eye-surgery affects apllications into any of the forces/services?

I do! From experience!! I joined the Navy as a Tif back in '91 and "passed" the eyesight test that was part of the medical. This was despite saying "I can't see anything" when asked to read as far as poss thru the letters! I got to HMS Raleigh and in my first week the MO staff tested our eyes....and said here you go Iain, have a medical discharge - you're blind!!
The limit for short-sighted people certainly used to be -7.5 dioptres (sp?). I was fractionally over it, and there was NO leeway.

My mate wants to join the police (why I don't know!) however, he has had laser eye surgery and English forces won't accept him...
...so he has applied to join the Scottish police (as they are so desperate for recruits they will take anyone! ) and then hopes to transfer to English 5-0 in a couple of years time.

When I joined the Marines in 2000, they tested me for colour-blindness as well as the usual wallchart test. I only read about 4 lines of the chart before I was told that my vision was fine, so I've no idea what the pass mark is or isn't.
What I do know is that night vision is a requirement for the Armed Forces, which IIRC is affected by the laser treatment. Can't speak for the other forces or the Police/Fire Services, but the Marines won't accept anyone with that type of treatment.

I have been long sighted since about 10 years of age, and I ended up in the Police service and on Traffic for 20 years.
Unless the rules have been changed and provided your eyesight is OK corrected I am sure it is acceptable, but it depends on the Force you wish to join. Some are more selective than others.
