Question

I've just been offered an interview for a job in Leeds and I wanted to ask a few questions of anybody who lives there or has lived there.

What's it like as a place to live? Is there any problem with owning a car like an STi and parking it about the place?

Like anywhere realy, depends where you live and what you do with your car, ie attract attention etc.

Can you commute into the town centre in your car? Or is it a public-transport only kind of thing?

I would personally try to avoid Leeds 9

(no offence to anyone who lives there, but that's my own opinion)

Well, the secret is not to live in Leeds itself, but perhaps one of the many villages/towns nearby.

The north of Leeds is nice (thats obviously because I live there!!)

Wink

Also avoid LS2,3,4,5,6,7,10,11,12,14,15

Other than that great place to live and work. City Centre is not car friendly (unless you compare it with Oxford)

Like others have said - avoid Leeds 9 (from there), it's a hot bed for car thieves. LS8 is almost as bad, as is LS6 LS4 LS5 LS7 LS14.

If you're going to live outside the city and travel in I'd live south of Leeds as it has excellent roads and motorways going into the city. Avoid Otley and Ilkley and anywhere north as the roads into Leeds are terrible and always congested.

Oh, and get a house with a garage as your car will always be a target!

& if you do move up there, then I would be a bit more circumspect about how/where you leave your car

Like, in a locked garage or at least hidden from the main road...

The office is near to Leeds station, so both York and Wakefield would be a short train commute away.

Not happy about taking a train instead of driving to work though

Barnaby,

I owned a Scoob just short of 3 years, live 6 miles north of Leeds, parked on the drive everynight, often left at Leeds station/airport.

No worries.

I wouldn't drive into Leeds City Centre!

It's become VERY car unfriendly in recent years!

It won't be long until they'll be charging for entry into the city centre.

House prices also vary massively from one side of Leeds to the other, so keep an eye out for that when/if you move up.

The interviews with a company called Ananova, an offshoot of Orange I think. They are right next to Leeds Station.

I've been out in Leeds a few times and it was brilliant. That's why the move has interested me

Barnaby

Just remember we don't do lager-top or Shandy up here

I have personally never had a problem with either of my Scoobs in Leeds, and I don't think that they are specifically targeted by your average scum bag. Most vehicle related theft in LS1 & 2 is theft of items left on full view.

Leeds is fine, great. Same as anywhere in that it has its good parts and its bad parts.

Sounds like you're working for Asda, KPMG, or someone around there?

LOL, I used to work at Ananova.

They are not in the City Centre, but at a place called Marshill Mill(SP), which is to the South West of the station. Probably a good 10 minute walk (at my pace). I think the office is in a nice area (NOT) (i.e red light area?... not sure, locals will tell more)
I only work in Leeds, only drive in when I have to, for reasons stated above. Car parking can be VERY expensive.
You can park near Ananova (if you can't get in the car park) for £3.50 a day atm. Once you add on petrol etc, it soon starts to add up. PT soons becomes the MUCH cheaper option.

Have to go offline mate, still have profesional interests in the company, so don't want to say anything one way or another.
