My rabbits I had as a child for about 6 years caught mixamotosis.
My dad caught them, and hit them over the head with a the flat side of a spade.

Kills them instantly and very quickly.

However, why not take them to the vet to be put down. Surely that's the best way.

Meat clever and 'off wi' their heads', is the quickest I can think of... or a mallet to the head as the skulls are very thin

Sorry, but you did ask

Take them to the vets, but you'll be charged for the privelege. I presume they've got myximatosis

PS: There weren't any replies when I first posted this, but I spent ages arsing around trying to find out how to spell myximatosis

Apologies for the split infinitive there....

Neil - 6 of my pet rabbits caught Myxy too - not a nice disease at all.

I have vague memories somewhere of vets not liking rabbits with Myxomatosis in their practise cos of the risk of fleas jumping ship if there are others, but i could be wrong

Sounds like Myxie to me, it is about the right time of year too I would agree with Neil, the spade is probably the quickest

BTW, If you intend getting more, consult a Vet, as Myxie stays 'live' in the soil for up to two years

If they look like this, then it is myxomatosis

myxomatosis causes the rabbit to go slowly blind and then starve to death because it can't see to eat

Horrible way to kill an animal.

That's the one...my rabbits caught it from the wild rabbits in the field hopping around their run..

Their eyes go red and bulbous, they can't eat, they can't think, have no concept of danger - hence why so many get run over when they have myxy and all in all it's very nasty.

Smack on the back of the head, not for the feint of heart as they make a squealing sound
I would take them to the vets.

Place a ruler right behind the bottomr of the skull and press down with average amount of pressure....1 being none, and 10 being alot, go 5. Give a swift tug on the tail and that dislocates the vertibra in the spine killing them instantly.

Sorry to hear about your pet.

If it's myxi, do they not need to be incinerated?

When I used to go netting with ferrets, we would hold the rabbits by there back legs and give them a swift but very firm blow to the base of the head with a small but heavy stick (called a priest as it administred the last rights, so to speak)

You can't let your kids see you do this so it has to be the vets

If you can face it.......

Hold them up in the air by the back legs, they will arch the neck up (as if trying to look up) and you give them a hard karate type chop to the back of the neck.....just behind the ears.

If you do this hard enough they will die instantly I promise.

Any of these help?

Unless you're used to killing wild animals and you can dispose of the bodies safely (i.e. without reintroducing the fleas to the environment) I would strongly recommend getting a vet to do it.

my bull terrier and lurchers are allways catching rabbits and kill them with a quick bite on the neck. not suggesting you use a dog! but it does seem very easy to kill them. not suggesting you bite them either! just trying to convey that they have a weak neck!

If you have a air rifle or pellet gun shoot them in the eye the brain is directly at the back and will kill instantly no pain.

Could you gas them?

Exhaust pipe from the car so they just fall asleep then use the more extreme methods?

Please just take the poor animals to the vets!!!! The vet will end their suffering in the most humane way possible. Vets do not usually charge much for seeing small animals. If you'd rather bludgeon them to death instead of letting them drift off under anaesthetic, then maybe you should have never had the rabbits to start off with.

Oops, maybe I shouldn't have read this thread.

Posted a while ago about having to kill a rabbit that I saw get hit by a car. Cos, I was a bit shocked at the time didn't think to run it over so crushed it's neck with my boot (it was real messed up anyway and it died pretty quick).

However, in your situation - take it/them to the Vets. Animals deserve to die with as little pain as possible. Ok, it might cost you, but any other way will make you sick.

Take them to the vets - they've served your kids with affection and pleasure since you got them. I've had to do this, and its not pleasant, but its better than some of the 'alternatives' above.

They atleast deserve some dignity.

I'm not about to go cutting their throats.

neil S. from what the Ex. Wife has said about them & the pic you have shown yes they have Mixwhatnot.

the reason I need to do it is, they rabbits are about 12 miles from where I live, I wont get there until after 9pm so the kids are in bed, I would need to collect them, & get them to a vet, the vet is not open at that time.

It cant until the weekend as its not fair & I dont want my kids seeing me kill their rabbits, my stomach is churning just thinking about doing it.

I cant gass them as they dont have a garage.
I dont have a gun or access to a gun, even if I did I would not use it.

yes they are pets, yes they are loved, yes they have a big cage [10 feet long X 4.5 feet wide] with internal living space.

The kids are going to be upset when they find out their rabbits have all died, they feed & water them every day.

Talk to your vet and see what he can suggest. They may be able to sort out you dropping them off for euthanasia at a later hour. Practices tend to have a nurse there 24 hours a day to recieve animals, take care of ones in the surgery and tend to emergencies. An injection will kill them imediately, you cannot be sure that any method suggested here will do the same. They are loved pets, so you would not want their last moments to be of excrutiating pain as they slowly die from some clumsy method.

How pathetic. Just take them to the vets. You will find a way if you are at all humane.

barge,

Do as GarnetFox suggests. I'm sure any vet will put themselves out to cater for your circumstances.

As a child (about 9-10years old) I lived in the countryside (Lound, Suffolk). A few friends and I were playing in the woods and came across a wild rabbit suffering from mixy. It was a distressing sight and we decided we had to put it out of it's misery. It took several goes to stamp on its neck before I actually killed it. A harrowing experience that I will not forget lightly.

Once again, I strongly suggest phoning the local vet. The profession they have chosen suggests they will be extremely accomodating when it comes to ending a pets suffering humanely.

Sounds horrible, must be doing the rounds cos our dog yakked up a load of rabbit, she found it dead (she couldnt catch it as shes a bit blind) so this thread makes me think it must be on the up.

She didnt yak it all up as she is lying there looking a bit like Elvis in his later years and sighing a lot, I fully expect a big load to greet me in the morning.

I had to destroy a Wood Pigeon than the dog somehow had mauled, it broke my heart because I love the Wood Pigeon as it has a lovely sound, however the best thing I could do for it was to destroy it as quickly as possible so I got the edge of my spade and put it on its neck and stood on the spade, it cut its head of and it died immediately, would however suggest you call the RSPCA as they may want info regarding Mixamatosis and will come and destroy the Rabbits.

If they have Myxi then get them put down ASAP, they will be suffering big time.

Best way would be vet, but that might have high costs, alternativly you could just brake the neck, but if they are your pet rabbits you could have emotional problems there.

Are you local to Essex, I could come out to you or drop them round my farm if you like, in Tiptree. I will take care of it if you need any help.

Cheers
