I grew up with Morrissey's words and Marr's tunes, and love (most of) their stuff.
Many hated them, and still do.
Why?
They were fooking class.
Your thinkings, please.

Memories of The Smiths.... Blitzed off my tree at the Hacienda with "how soon is now" pumping out the speakers. Fecking students everywhere wearing Morrisey type jeans and glasses :O W@nkers...I hate students.

class band
and despite what everyone said about morrisey being a miserable bar steward i found their lyrics had a lot of humour
but then maybe that's just me
johnny marr is also probably one of the best guitarists ever produced

love the smiths, grew up on them. Their Lyrics are hilareous at times. Morrisey grew up next door to a woman i used to work with, born with a silver spoon in his mouth doesnt even come close, he sure wasnt working class stock.

i saw the Smiths at Glastonbury,84ish,absolutely bluddy brilliant.
...it was just when Morrisey had stopped stuffing those flowers down his trousers,
but everyone was still throwing daffodils at him...he was fuming!!!
the highlight for me that w-end,however, was seeing Fela Kuti
and Weather Report.....ahhhhh,those were the days

Morrisey WAS working class stock, he grew up on the means streets of Manchester (Salford etc) as did Johnny Marr so dont talk about what you know nothing about.
The guy is a genius.

have nothing against the smiths and respect them. never got into them massively mind you, but i reckon that your mass market is not going to directly indentify themselves with morrisey.
aqquired taste i reckon and thats cool. i just cant stand all this main stream drivel.
some of the vocalists are good, but it would be great to hear them sing something they want to sing.

Glen......"heaven knows i'm miserable now"...same effect mate.
"I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
but heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
and heaven knows I'm miserable now"

Morrisey lived in Hale Barnes, he most certainly was not Whalley Range stock. I grew up on the mean streets of Manchester, i went to school 100 Yards from the Apollo, not the most scenic place in the world.

Saw them in Newcastle in 1982, with my first real girlfriend. Morrissey at his finest, gladioli sprouting from his back pocket.
Then went back to Jo's place and ...... let's just say that I'll not forget the night I went to see The Smiths!
Listening to the music 20 years on, Boy With a Thorn in His Side, Girlfriend in a Coma, How Soon is Now ... complete classics, and far less dated than, say, the Human League (different genre, same time). Morrissey's solo work (The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get & Interesting Drug are in the car as I speak) is criminally underrated.
