Has anyone any experience of tracking their family history?
There's loads of sites on the web offering access to billions of names, but I'd like some real-life experiences and recommendations first.
My Mothers side of the family are from Scotland, but my fathers are from the Czech Republic which might make things a bit more tricky.
I want to suprise them, so I need to be tactful and a bit covert when asking certain questions. If you could suggest what I need to know before starting that would be great.
Is it something you did yourself or did you find a website or company that did it for you?
I've tried a few searches and found sod all, so I'm a bit sceptical of subscribing to any of the family history websites.
Thanks,
Stefan

Go to www.ffhs.org.uk for starters. This is the Federation of Family History Societies, the umbrella group for UK clubs and societies. Very informative site with loads of into leaflets and anorak stuff when you really get going. Coincidence as I am currently thinking about a project to design a user friendly CD (or more probably update someone else's) to provise a suitable format/template to prepare a family history and tree as I reckon that there is almost too much information out there which is off putting for the non-anorak who simply wants to record the basic stuff to start with. Happy researching. DL

My dad's been doing this for years. He's traced ours right back to 1060, or something. I've produced a web-based version which you can see at http://www.otway.info.
There's a few links to some useful genealogy sites on my site.
