Question

As a first digital camera for myself, & after hours of research, this would appear to be my choice. The attractive thing is that it has loads of manual operations for me to learn, but can be used in fully auto mode too.

Yay or nay?

I have this camera, and it's simple to use, and can generate superb pictures. We bought one at Gatwick along with a 128MB card as we were going on our honeymoon to Orlando and thought it would be the best option considering the potential number of photo's to be taken.

The camera was small enough to carry around, take good photo's and record any bits that we needed to (parades at parks, etc..)

I'd definitely recommend anyone to get one of these, as I'm a happy punter!

I've got the s40.. Pretty much the same except slightly larger images.. Had it almost a year now and it's perfect for size and performance... Good kit.. you can't go wrong..

You are right about the manual features on the S30, they are superb, with all the usual Canon EOS type features.

If you just want to print out pics at 6 x 4 then the S30 is great, but If you are going to print out pics at A4 size or above, you are as well to spend an extra 50 quid on the S40 (which is what I did ).

The S40 has basically the same technical spec as the G2, but in a more compact body. The disadvantage is that it's optical performance is not quite as good.

Thanks guys.

Great picture, Daryl, where is that?

Best price for the S40 (which I may now stretch to ) is 419GBP on buyacamera.co.uk. Sound about right?

That is a very good price I paid 500 quid for mine in February and that was a good price at the time.

The pic is of Darling Harbour and the Anzac Bridge in Sydney, taken from the AMP Tower. Glad you like it

I've been looking at a few websites tonight & have now found it for 399GBP (inc delivery) on go2camcorder.co.uk. The thing is I don't think that includes a battery(?) & has a 14 day delivery time.

It seems I might be better waiting a couple of weeks anyway as the S45, direct replacement for the S40, is out in November- though I can't see what the difference is.
