What amuses me is that they get stroppy if you use your moby on the forecourt, yet they have a whacking great transponder in their sign

Could be the reason petrol stations don't want anybody using phones on the forecourt is because they can interfere with 'delicate electronics'i.e petrol pumps digital readouts etc. I suppose they think there is a chance of altering readings, maybe getting free petrol:0
Remember the old myth about boosted CB radios next to petrol pumps? Key the mike and it stop registering?
God damn smilies...

<Rant mode on>
Why are so many people kicking up a stink about mobile phone masts in their area?
I understand that there are possible health issues but the same people must have mobile phones and would moan like **** if they couldn't get a signal.
Especially if they were involved in an accident and needed to call 999 but there were no masts nearby and they couldn't get a signal.

And the warnings on not using mobile phones on the forecourt are somewhat hollow now...

"Shell has promised to reveal which 210 of its 1,100 petrol stations have mobile phone masts hidden inside the forecourt price signs."

Couldn't agree more.
Besides, having your head shaved when you get cancer looks quite stylish.
You ever read the studies into increases in leukemia (sp?) near electricity pylons? It would surprise me greatly if there wasn't a similar effect near mobile phone masts....

Im just a bit curious as to why they've decided to start hiding the phone masts in Petrol Station signs but want the phones themselves turned off.
Surely the mast/trasmitter has a higher chance of causing sparks than the phones themselves.
(not that i'm bothered as the chances of a petrol station blowing up cuz of a faulty phone is so remote that it's not even worth thinking about)

Allegedly, the risk from phones is if you drop the handset, and the battery disconnects - arcing/sparking as it does so.
If that's the case, then the only risk from the hidden transmitter is if the whole thing collapses - in which case the sh*t would probably hit the fan anyway.

This may sound a bit daft but has anyone tried throwing a lit match into a puddle of petrol. Tried it a few times and 4 out of 5 times the match goes out before the petrol lights. (don't ask why i tried it... and no... it wasn't in a forecourt.... and no.... i am actuatlly mentally stable)

I know what you mean about the match thing, but on the other hand there were two stories of people getting burnt when their 'phone ignited petrol fumes while they were filling up. I leave mine in the car now.

MarkO - why would you be suprised if there wasn't a lukaemia risk from phone masts? The power output of the average mast is 20w maximum and more usually less that of a baby listening device. The Stewart Enquiry found no evidence whatsoever that radiation from masts poses any health risk.

My friend works for T mobile designing sights for their radio masts and he reckons if the public knew where half of these masts were located thewre would be a public outcry. he reckons that most churches have them in their steeples and are paid to do so , they have even created dummy trees and put masts in them !!!!!

I think its a good idea, we are shunning the mobile industry for this when we really should be thanking them. The only reason people are kicking off is because it wasnt made public, I saw the fool on tv last night who couldnt say a convincing word in about 3 attempts!
We live in a great era of technological advance and yet there are people who try and stump this by saying its all bad, if you could live in an area with or without a decent mobile signal what would you choose?
Just another thing for people to whinge about, christ, why bother, your only here once so lets enjoy it instead of crusading for cleaner soap!

Well if everyone is that worried they should get rid of the TV's in the kids bedrooms as they give out loads of radiation. Oh and the Microwave oven needs to go as well.
Double glazing should be got rid of because it encourages damp in houses which leads to breathing problems in children because of the spores in the house.

Thing is, everyone knows that using a mobile phone gives you a brain tumour. You only have to look at the technology and it's clear that they're spreading cancer.

Just makes me laugh, these things have been in petrol station signs for at least 4 years. The problem people don't appreciate is that the Governments position is to facilitate an efficient and total network with competition and many of the installtions do not require planning permission. As someone said above, there are lods of them in places you don't know about, churches, tops of supermarkets, lamp posts, small boxes on the side of buildings. Either people have to stop buying phones or the government has to change the approach to mast siting and provision. As a chartered town planner who has to make a judgement on where these things go I can tell you it is an utter nightmare.

the mast installer that gave the Sun the exclusive on how to spot them in signs (its the sticker thats says mast here) has now expressed concerns about the effect on his brain......if this guy instals masts can there really be that much brain to effect?
