Was having a conversation in the pub at the weekend. The topic -

The MOBOs....

What is the point of the MOBOs?

Surely in our 'multi-racial' world, there is no need for a seperate awards ceremony......

What about a white-only awards ceremony?

Hang on...can't do that - it's discriminating

You'd never be allowed to have a MOWO award.

Its either a sign that we are now living in truly multi-racial society and that differences are now somethng to be proud of, cherish and celebrate as making the whole something better or its hypocracy on a giant scale.

i used to agree with smithy but having recently read a book on the subject of blacks in sports i was amazed at how recent and how bad the treatment of blacks was (particulaly in the USA) and so if they feel they need a music awards then so be it, a few whites moaning that its "racist" in reverse is hardly the same as getting told to sit at the back of the bus!

also the music industry is global and so not tied down to the english view on this which is way different to the US view, watch a Chris Rock concert, if he used those black V white gags over here people would think he had a HUGE chip on is shoulder (err, which he has! but it seems justifiable living in the US where the stats on things like unemployment and prison population are grim when you look at the proportion of blacks in those figures)

Who said it is only for Black people ?

Its Music Of Black Origin. This doesn't mean its performed solely by black people, it just means the the musical form originated from black roots.

Personally, I'm all for it in theory. Black rooted music is my thing and its instantly distinguishable from commercial white trash. Unfortunately, the MOBO's has turned into a commercial pile of sh!te and now kind of defeats the object.

As DJ dunk said it's not black only it's for Music Of Black Origin although I do agree that if you had a Music Of White Origin awards there would be uproar plus the place would be kinda empty apart from the Hillbillies

I used to Live in Tottenham, just across the road from Broadwater Farm.

There used to be a Black Womens Social Centre can you imagine if there was a White Womens Social Centre.

I think it's odd, really -- if you think about it, all modern music apart from UK / Irish / Celtic fiddley-diddley folk is of black origin.

Blues? Black origin.
Rock? Black origin.
Soul? Black origin.
Jazz? Black origin.
Dance (all kinds)? Black origin.

I know what they're trying to get at, it's just a crap name for the awards.
