Wots the best way to go with digital cameras?

I like the idea of compact flash as you can get some big memory in the form of micro drives!

I used SD on my cannon Camcorder and like it a lot, plugs straight into a reader in the USB port.
Cards and readers are quite cheap from Jessops

I use Smart Cards - personally I also use 'em for file transfers between my several computers (when I can't be bothered to wait for a CD to burn!!)

Just use several USB card readers

got both.... just have to remember that a microdrive has moving bits and thus you have to remember not to drop it etc.

both work well... most cameras esp Fuji's will appear to Windows as a removable disk anyway.- regardless of storage type

Don't let it be a deciding factor.

CF cards are bigger. SM is limited to 128MB. There's ANOTHER format just around the corner to break the SM limit of 128MB, but that's no good for you now.

A large card sounds attractive, until you inadvertently rip it out when it's writing and find that instead of losing 20 pictures, you've lost 300 . (There are recovery programs, but they ain't perfect)

The advice that I got when buying my camera last year was to not worry about it, even though I had a 64MB CF card, as prices were due to drop so the sales assistant said. He was spot on. . I ended up with a card that took SM.

The S602 from Fuji has both SM and CF

Oh, and microdrives... Hmm, yet to be convinced that these are the greatest idea. The newer generation seem better than the first ones, for sure.

Choose the camera rather than the storage media. I think all formats will be in use for a long time yet.

Having said that, Compact Flash seems to have the edge on price/capacity. 64MB for £30-ish and going up to 512MB!

But bear in mind that as you can preview digital images after you've taken them, you can delete all the crap as you go. So you only store the best images and you can keep more than you think on quite a small card. Compress them into JPEGs (Joint Photography Experts Group - industry standard) for even more capacity.

Snap away

Richard.

Whatever you buy, it's a good idea to go on your new camera's website, and find out what MAKE of cf/sm card you should use.
I have a Minolta Dimage 7i, and bought a cheapo 256Mb cf card for it, which it defo did not like.
I've now swopped it for a known brand, one that Minolta says will work, and have no probs now.
