OK, as some will know I am racing in the Nick Wild banger race on Monday and need to source a helmet from somewhere.
With all the trackdays etc requiring helmets, just wondering if it is worth buying one now. If so what can I expect for the least money? i.e. £50 ish if poss
Dont want to pay a lot for something I will probably only use twice a year, and it doesnt have to be race approved I dont think.

£50 is that how much your head is worth?
Seroisly, hit a m'cycle shop, cheap FM lids starts from about £40. Personally i've been spoiled by a Shoei, and i wouldn't put my head in anything else!

PS The most important thing with any lid (regardless of cost) is that it fits correctly. For this reason i'd never buy one mail-order, but always try it on in a shop.

Crikey - thats had some response. Guess I need to re-value my head
For trackday use, how important is it to have the best - we only do speeds on there that I do on the roads anyway without a lid. Well not always but you get the picture.
£80 seems reasonable enough though.

DW,
Take a trip down your local motorcyle shop. Ask them if they have any of last "years" design or colours discounted.
I got a Shoei (sp?) for £100 instead of £200 as it was last years colour (white??? ).

I rally with a Sparco Club helmet and its pretty good. Theyre open face, about £55 and although basic are decent helmets. Its not particularly heavy (unless compared to a Peltor one) and doesnt make my neck/shoulders ache the day after an event like some people seem to have..

Just get an approved helmet. The rest is just fashion and style. Approved(Gold Sticker) is good enough for a track day. Spending more money on a helmet DOES NOT mean its safer. It may be lighter or a better colour or with a washable/removable interior but not automatically safer.
I'd imagine you'll get a cheaper closed faced Motorcycle one than an open faced one , due to volume of manufacture.
Get down to a shop and try it on, fit is an important factor, certainly more important than higher cost....

I have one you could borrow for the banger racing if you want DW....
I am off to Whitby on Wednesday so could meet you somewhere on the way?
Not an expensive helmet but you are in a car after all, it is a fibre glass full face one IIRC.. would be fine for a one off but if you intend doing it lots then worth spending some money.
When on my bike I have a 400pound Arai.. cannot beat it IMHO..
If you go to buy one check the date on the strap.. which is the manufacture date, you don't want one more than a couple of months old as they only last a limited time before going off (sun light ages them too) so if last years colours etc check the date and know that it will last less time.. although the top helmets should last a lot more than the 4years they are stated as being good for.. (ACU Approved sticker on the rear and you are suppose to remove a quarter of the sticker every year, then replace when gone etc)...
Try it on and get one that is a tight fit.. if you can move your head around in it then it is too big.. more expensive helmts also have different cheek pads you can fit to make it tight there too..
My current helmet was very tight when I first bought it, used to hurt my ears getting it on and off.. but when on was perfect fit..
after about 60,000miles it has relaxed slightly and would be loose had I bought one that was not tight in the first place.

1) Get a bike helmet as they're much cheaper (made in volume, no VAT).
2) Get a full-face one. They do not obstruct your view at all. Even if you don't crash big style, a nasty off will smash your head against the window or face on the wheel.
3) Make sure it's so tight it hurts when you put it on, and squeezes your head firmly but comfortably when on. It'll soon ease off.
4) Wear a balaclava underneath. Aids comfort, easier to take helmet on and off, washable. Also, if you must wear that diamond stud, it saves your ear from being ripped off
Cheers,
Richard.
