VERY high, Val Thorens has one of the best snow records in europe due to the height, and the fact its sheltered so tends to keep it when it does fall.

Adam, go to http://www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/home.asp, go to Snow Reports, Historical, select Val Thorens.

Hope this helps

No idea about new years but i have skied the area from Meribel and it would take you several weeks to ski every run.
Meribel is a good party type resort as well (just maybe the hooray henry).

Should be fine Adam saying that Cervinia (IT) which has the highest skiing in Europe off the klein Matterhorn lift, struggled for snow last season around that time. I'm there over Xmas

Some mates went there last year and although the snow reports said 'not alot of snow' they reckoned it was fine (if a bit patchy/icy). The biggest problem was how 'kin busy it gets at that time of year, especially if the snow isn't good elsewhere. But then you'll know that! Val Thorens is known as a snow sure destination.

If you've never ski'd the area before you'll love it. Have fun!

Did 3 Valleys (Meribel) at New Year a few years back. Quality skiing (or boarding) and yes, you can ski new runs all week there's that much on offer.

Val T not renowned for it's nightlife but definitely a good destination to be snow sure (2,400m base). I usually go to Meribel for the breadth of skiing plus the bonus of lively apres ski. New Year is always a bit of a lottery but if you've booked, what can you do about it now?? Do what I do and hope for the best every year, then watch the snow reports on Teletext to see if there's been a "big dump".

Meribel or Tignes end of Jan for me.

As high a chance as anywhere in France - as said earlier, due to the height of the resort.

Having a winter off from ski-ing to go on a cruise - not convinced though !

thanks guys.

it isnt actually booked yet, as arranging a group of 8 is always a nightmare.

a cruise is also an option, and personally I just want to be away for new year. Would rather go skiing when the season is really flowing like feb or march.

We have a flat up there and you're usually fairly guaranteed snow - but having said that there have been a couple of occasions in the past when they've had to bus people to the Fond 2 lift.

My hubbie is a Ski Club of Great Britian Rep (this is what he does on his holidays from work) This year he's going to be in VT - the jammy whats-it! he'll be there from the 4th of Jan for 3 weeks - so he's definitely praying for good snow.

The first year we bought the place - we spent two of the most wonderful weeks - perfect sunshine - perfect snow conditions - all the lifts open and the place was empty that was mid December, it's never quite been the same since, the seasons are changing.

If you need any info on VT let me know - we know it - well Paul does - extremely well.

PS: Val Thorens also has a very good website of it's own.
www.valthorens.com

They have webcams - but it's probably a bit early yet for predictions etc though, I doubt even the Ski Club will have any info in that respect.

I keep missing stuff....

New Year in VT is always fantastic - very lively - in fact the amount of incendary devices the Italians & Dutch manage to get up the mountain is incredible - just remember to duck!

Adam
Had my stag week end in Meribel last year in early Jan.
Plenty of snow but ferking cold.I've snowboarded all "Les Trois Valles" and Meribel is the best for the all round package(night life etc)Hit Rond Point for the bollox Apres ski.
