Question

Hi Folks

After much umming and ahhing (unless I change my mind again) I'll soon be the proud owner of a Philips 32PW9617 Pixel Plus Dolby Digital TV and Philips DVD723 DVD Player. Wanted to double-check with the AV experts on here what's the best way to cable this up with my other kit (PS2, Nicam VCR, Sky Digibox). I'm thinking the following, but correct me if I'm wrong:

TV to DVD - scart to scart, plus coax to coax Digital Audio cable
TV to Sky Box - scart to scart
video to Sky Box - scart to scart (do I need to connect video to TV directly via SCART too? Is there anything gained by this?)
TV aerial to TV via Video
PS2 to TV via S-Video cable.

Does this sound right? Any recommendations on cable manufacturers? Thor and Ixos look pretty good to me..

Any help much appreciated..

Greg

Hi Paul

No amp as Dolby Dig is built into the TV.

I think I am correct in saying that you will need to connect your video to TV (via scart) in order to watch videos.

On my current setup the video hangs off the Sky box (via SCART) which is connected to the TV (via SCART). seems to work OK but I wondered whether I'd get a better picture by also connecting the video to the telly direct via SCART?

scart vcr > TV : deffo ! alot of quality lost from the likes of SKY to VCR so breaking down the signal via scart will help get the quality as close to orig. as pos
Everything else sounds fine

Hiya,

If you've got a decent SCART from VCR to Sky, then hooking up the VCR via Sky to the TV shouldn't make too much difference. Don't forget that VCRs are, by definition, crap (VCR=Very crappy resolution)!!!

I cannot see a difference with my set up -
Sky and DVD each connected direct to 36" TV with £30 SCART leads
VCR connected to Sky by £10-£15 SCART lead.
If you have an extra SCART socket on the TV then you can loop another cable into the equation but really you probably don't need to bother.

From all of this I just use the Audio-Out phonos from the TV to feed my amp - not totally purist I know, but it's so much easier than every component going through the Amplifier.

Greg,
what do you think of the Philips 9617? I am having a nightmare choosing between that and the Sony 32FQ75 but need to make a decision by Sunday. Mal

IMHO Ixos etc are just pretty toy cables. Try anything made by QED. You will notice that they are never the first to bring anything out, but when they do it is allways the best.

Well before I can answer I need to know how many sockers you have on the TV

TV to DVD Defo Scart
TV to Sky Box - There are tow scart sockets on the back of the Sky box. Put one to the TV and the other to the Video (Clearly labelled on back of Sky box)
I would take the aerial to the sky box and then loop out to the TV.
PS2 to TV via S-Video cable.(Use the connection on the front of the TV for ease of operation)

Does that help any?
