decent DTS films?
#1
Right, picking up my new amp and speakers on Friday, finallly making the jump from good old Pro-logic to digital \ DTS.
I have plenty of DVD's with digital soundtracks, but none with DTS. Anyone recommend anything in particular, or have an opinion of DTS vs Digital soundtracks?

U571. Those continuous depth charge attacks make the house rock. Predator Special Edition is another good one. Behind Enemy Lines has some good moments too.
Gladiator and SPR have only Dolby Digital sound tracks but are still pretty good (but I do find the back speakers a little too active on some 5.1 soundtracks).

DTS is clearer, but a good dolby sound track can be nearly as good. If a disk has DTS i'll always use it.
On some disks(Gladiator) for example the difference is massive, like the difference between normal dolby prologic sound and 5:1.

True it does, but Ian said any 'decent DTS films'
Gladiator is well worth hearing on the DTS soundtrack - always the one I play if anyone comes round and they haven't seen / heard DVD before Normally blows them away.

That one where he's attaching stone cladding to his house and then this guy walks up and says "**** that's one ugly car, but anyway, where would you like the fountain of the Belgian boy weeing, Mr DT-S?"

DTS Is a less compressed form of 5:1. It's like comparing an jpg to a bitmap. That's why some disks lose some extras but have a DTS soundtrack on. The reason why lord of the rings special edition runs to 2 disks for the film is because the DTS soundtrack takes up so much space.
As for the difference, look at the same image as Jpeg and Bitmap. Same goes for DTS Vs 5:1

5.1 is good enough for me.I guess to get the real benefit of DTS you need a really good quality A/V setup and full size speakers, not satellites, otherwise the axtra sound quality is lost in the processing.

Try listening to a setup like Sony's DAV S800 (what I have at home). For around &700 it is stunning. To be honest, I couldn't be arsed to go through the whole process of setting up a separates system (done that with my HiFi too many times) and I went for an all in one solution. Stunning would be the word - better than several separate component systems that I've heard costing a lot more.
Easch to their and if you have the time, inclination and budget to go out and match all the components, then go ahead, but there are some very good systems out there as well.

You're dead right there Chris.........i was in comet the other day and they had "the mummy" on a Panasonic all in one system, about 4-5 hundred quid IIRC.
It sounded well impressive, and was really compact.......good if you want an instant 5.1 setup

I have an Onkyo TX DS595 Av receiver with a Pioneer 636D DVD player and Mission FS2AV speakers.
Never really managed to set it up right. It works but whether or not the interconnects I have used are the best choices, e.g. coax/optical - who knows?!
Then the amp user manula doesnt really explain setup correctly. Does the distance for the speakers mean how far from listener of from source for example. I don't know and it doesnt say. Certainly my centre speaker isnt right.
But the question I was going to ask is about the best option for soundtrack when playing a film. Mine always switches to Dolby Pro Logic II but ready this thread seems I should maybe go for DTS instead if it is on the DVD?
Tut, wish I had enough time to get the best out of my toys Almost every system I hear in a shop sounds better and my kit wasnt that cheap.
Sorry to witter on - advise re soundtrack pls
