It was a 380EX
Was being the operative word...
I guess the batteries must have slipped inside when I layed it down, only having 2 inside meant they could flap around.
Not under warranty, but have found 1 piece of paper on my insurance policy that states accidental damage made from an external source....wonder if that means batteries.
It sure as hell stunk the house out though, a choking stench

I can wholeheartly recommend Jessops used equipment, bargains to be had. Might also be worth looking on eBay, I just picked up a 70-200 f2.8 IS for less than half RRP.
Gun might be repairable also, if somethings burnt it'll be easier to spot on the board!

Sooooo pissed off it's unreal
The batteries were getting low on the Sky controller, so I pinched my newly charged Nmh batteries out my Canon Speedlight Flashgun, only needed 2 of them so I left 2 inside the flash, closed the compartment lid and carried on watching TV.
Smelt burning 5 minutes later
Running round the house eventually locate it to my camera bag, where inside is a red hot melting flashgun
Its shafted never to flash again
Do you reckon my house insurance will cover this (no idea where the paperwork is at the moment)

Ouch! What model of flash is (was) it?
You did leave the remaining two batteries correctly inserted, right? The only way I can see this sort of thing happening is if you put them back in the wrong way round. Maybe they slipped in the battery compartment? I have a 420EX, and they'd be quite free to rattle about with just 2 cells.
If the flash is under warranty then maybe you could claim for it under that. Depending on the excess for your home insurance it probably wouldn't be worth claiming, especially since they'll just load your premium for following years.

Hehe, I know that smell quite well, burning electronic equipment is quite distinctive! (I'm an electronic engineer and I sit opposite a power supply expert...)
Do a search on Jessops' web site under used equipment, they have three second hand 380EX's for sale. Shouldn't cost too much to replace it.
