Three salesmen go into an hotel, and ask for a room each for the night. The manager tells them he has only one triple-bedded room for £30 the night, so they agree to take it, and each hands over £10.
A while later, while checking his records, the manager realises that the room was only £25 the night, and, being an honest chap, sends a bell-boy upstairs with £5 for the 3 men.
The bell-boy, however, is not so honest. It occurs to him that £5 won't split 3 ways, so he gives each man £1, and pockets the other £2 for his trouble.
Now, each man had originally paid £10, and got £1 back so they only paid £9.
3 men @ £9 each is £27, plus £2 in the waiter's pocket makes £29.
Where's the other £1 gone then??

WHat missing pound?

The room cost £25, the waiter puts £2 in his pocket so the room cost £27, they get £1 each 27 + (1 x 3) = 30

Question

Yeah, but if they paid £10 each to start with, and got £1 each back, that means they only paid £9 each?
Then 3x9 =27, plus £2 in the waiter's pocket is £29????

The last line is the trick. The room cost should be MINUS the £2 kept by the waiter.

The way I see it, They Didn't pay £27 for the room, they paid £25 the bellboy took £2 so you don't have to add what the bell boy got on to the £27 figure again.

So they all paid £27 - so wheres the 3 quid? easy they have it, a pound each

You need to take the £2 off of £27 to get £25 rather than add it to try and make thirty.

£10 + £10 + £10 - £5 = £25

(£9 * 3) - £2 = £25
