Does anyone know what the current "official" fastest time for this is? All I can remember is that a bloke on a Laverda 750 did it in the mid-70s, using NO motorways, in under 17 hours total (including stops) which is around a 60mph average.

Just found out that a bloke on a prototype Norton wankel bike did it in 12 hours 40 minutes in 1979 -- that's an 81mph average. Try doing that these days .....
