The Scottish Socialist Party have announced their intention to replace the council tax with a scheme that is earnings related - e.g. with those earning over £90k to pay an additional 20% tax above this. 'an unashamed redistribution of wealth tax'. they have even drafted a proposal for 100% tax above £250k as 'noone needs more than that to live on'. nice.

WHY????

- what the **** isn't council tax treated as a utility bill? i.e. I am paying for the bins etc to be emptied, why should this cost me differing amounts in different parts of the country (there would be an uproar if we had to pay double for gas in different parts of the country but everyone just accepts council tax).
- the mainline tax system should be made more transparent rather than less. Everybody has let Labour get away with breaking their manifesto promise not to raise income taxed by adding 1% across the board to NI. To suggest an earnings related element for council tax - NO!
- why do these socialist pillocks think that a redistribution of wealth is good for the economy? a heavy incentive for the best brains/ earners to go overseas would have a large negative effect on tax revenues.
- why should the ******* who didn't pay enough attention at school be encouraged to be freeloaders!

but then I was for the poll tax. noone makes the nasty 'rich' pay more for bread and electricity, so why should they pay more for the bins to be emptied?

I think this probably explains exactly why the Scottish Socialist party aren't in any sort of power.

Also collecting bins in rural areas does cost more than in urban areas but that harldy seems like a justification for another income tax.

Personally I could never see the problem with the poll tax. It was a tax on individuals to pay for services. Why should a young couple living in a reasonable house pay so much more than a family of 5 living in a smaller house for services which are essentially used on a per person basis.....

because human nature dictates that those earning less, or who feel they have "less than they deserve", WANT to think that those better off are being penalised! After all, its only fair

Thats why all these crackpot hairbrain schemes get off the ground!!!!!

Simple jealousy. He's got more than me he SHOULD BE MADE to pay more! He can "afford it"....

And unfortunately those in power KNOW this, and will get back in on the majority vote. And the majority are skint, the government see to that with all the OTHER taxes they have....

Its a brilliant scam really. Keep them dumb (hence all the soaps on TV instead of anything even verging on educational) and keep them poor.

Well to a certain extent one would assume that Council Tax is based on ones income. After all it works on a banding system whereby the more valuable your house the higher the band, and therefore the higher the bill.

The council tax will also vary throughout the country due to the different things councils spend their money on. Some subsidise car parking, providing free car parking, however the government assumes they charge for it, therefore the council taxpayers have to pay for it. Whilst the emptying of bins might be assummed to be the same across the country I bet it isn't due to higher living costs in the south etc.

Some councils run leisure centres, theatres etc all of which have to be supported by the council tax payers in the area.

I shan'tt mention some of the grants some local councils hand out either!

In theory I think the government set spending limits etc so that council tax should be the same throughout the country however it doesn't quite work like that! Not only that but the cynics would say that those councils that are in labour run areas get more money from central government than those that aren't.

Perhaps the solution is a combination of council tax and poll tax? To use the classic analogy which should the granny living in her terraced house have the same bill as the fmily of five living next door?

If this was brought in, can you imagine the amount of our Scottish friends flooding down south, it would be like a scene from Braveheart.....
