Question

And I don't mean flattish - I mean truly, properly flat (like you'd get after grinding)? And how did they know it was flat?

Any mechanical engineers out there?

I'd imagine it was an iterative process. Testing it's flat isn't hard - just put a marble on it and see if it rolls into the middle.

A skilled engineer can make perfect flat with firstly a file, and then with a scraper.

or you can float metal on mercury.
