Question

No not me, still got my P1, but my brother is buying a 328 (newish shape), nice car, made me think about the P1 until I drove the P1 again !

Something odd has turned up and I need some thoughts from bods on Scoobynet - the name on the log book is different to the guy who is selling it. He says its his business partner - we're gonna check with BMW but that does not truly get round the problem. He could be selling someone else's car ? We did go to his house and that, everything looked legit, but this is new ?

Any thoughts on how we should proceed ? Would the HPI show anything ?

Thanks

It is a bit dodgy.

If I knew the guy then fine, but this could be a trader at work. You need to contact the guy on the log book for piece of mind.

If in doubt walk away, there will always be another car,the Hpi will only show outstanding finance, not who the car actually belongs too.If it doesnt feel right my best advice is to leave it,i've been in this position where a car and the location its being sold dont quite fit,i was viewing the car for a friend who was dead set on buying this particular car but as soon as i saw the guy and the location, the type of car he was selling just didnt fit.He walked after my advice and we found a much better example of the same car 2 days later which was all above board.

Question

Personally, I'd check the legality of his claim.
I'd be inclined to contact his "business partner" first to check it out mate.

Everything looks ok - i.e. the car matches with where he lives and his lifestyle, so thats not an issue I don't think. He did say that he was selling the car as he had to pay off a large tax bill....

Exclamation

So why is he doing the selling and not his business partner?

I'd want to know for sure.

Is the address on the V5 the same place that you viewed the car? And is this address the seller's home?
You could always write a letter to the name on the V5 at the address on the V5 to see if you can get an explanation.
Don't forget, the name on the V5 doesn't prove ownership (i.e. legal title to the vehicle) it merely shows who is teh registered keeper. You need to see the purchase invoice from when the car was bought by its current owner. This should be either from a garage that you can follow up with, or from a private seller whose name will be on the V5, who you can also follow up with.

If in doubt walk away - if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Thumbs down

Sal - good point. Spent best part of 5 hours travelling and looking at this car - looks immaculate, then he tells us that the person on the log book is not his. Basically, we have to do more checks, but my brother didn't want to do all this messing about. Think he will walk away and pay the excess at BMW dealer now. Shame really as it's good value I reckon.

Talking

Suppose he's just had a barny with his partner, who has now gone away on business for a few weeks.Could be selling behind his back.
Get written agreement of registered keeper to be sure,to be sure.

Ash

Sounds strange, dont buy that car. Dont buy one from a dealer either.

You can have my ma's 328 (all extras, GPS, electric sunroof, Harman Kardon etc etc) for 14,000. It's LHD though. 3 years old.

Claudius - do you have your ma's permission to sell her car?

(BTW, I'm kinda warming to you now - you're not quite so caustic anymore)

Wink

<hijack>

Oh Claudy, is it a 2 or 4 door? Auto or manual? Assume that is the price in Euros? What colour?

</hijack>

Ash, I'd walk away.

yes, I know. Its kind of difficult as the emotions start to kick in when you see a really good example.

Ooooooohhh, I feel all emotional now, you guys are so nice to me
I have a feeling there will be a lot of hugging and cheek kissing (I live in France, after all) at the ring

Yes, of course I do have my mother's permission to sell her car. In fact, she wants me to sell it now (she just got the Alpina B3 I showed you somewhere here like a moth ago), but I want to keep it till Sept when my car is ready (ie engine inside engine bay )

It's a grey 4 door BMW 328i with steptronic, black leather, GPS, luxury pack with wood stuff, Harman Kardon sound system with 6 CD charger and 12 speakers (REALLY good!), 17 inch wheels from the BMW accessory catalogue, 40,000 km, perfectly serviced at BMW dealer etc, totally mint I'll see if I can find a pic.

Selling it for 25,000 EUROS which I believe to be around £14,000. New price was over twice that.
