I've had a Kona Caldera Mountain Bike for a few years and I'm getting ready for a change.
The Konas been good and the 2002 Kona Pahoehoe is on offer at the moment. Has anybody got one? - if so what do you reckon? The bike has Hayes mechanical discs - are these any good?
Cheers,
Ian.

The frame is ok. the brakes are not very good . If its mech disks you want then go for the very best.... AVID. I'm tempted to say one of the best brakes you can buy.

I would agree on the brakes front. Don't know much about Konas though
Would suggest, if you do buy, to swap the Hayes for the Avids. Or even better, if it is a bike shop you are looking to buy from, see if they will do it in the deal.
Cheers

Thanks for the replies chaps.
The bike is on offer at that well known specialist bike shop Halfords £880 (reduced from £1100). I'm not sure if they'd swap the brakes as part of the deal (doubt it!) Kona do the Muni Mula which is basically the same bike with V Brakes. This is on offer mail order for £800 from Evans Cycles - might consider this instead.
I tried bartering with Halfords but they wouldn't budge. They are offering £50 worth of accessories free at the moment which doesn't seem a bad deal.
Any other recommendations for a hard tail bike around the £800 mark?
Cheers,
Ian.

The mini mula is a superb bike, i went for one instead of the pahoehoe, as it's not really worth the extra. Still got mine after years of abuse. Unless the disc brakes are what you really want, i'd get the bike, get used to it and then upgrade the brakes later.
Wonder if AP racing do a 6 pot setup?
anyone looked at mini mula in the mirror....almost spells aliminium! daft canadians

what are you going to use the bike for??
Kona..I have one .Are very nice frames. Forget "TREK" Maybe a SPSLZD Rockhopper A1 comp disc for £849. ( EVANS). Or if you realy want a graet bike ..Buy second hand.. There have been a few good ones here for sale.Serious, Some bikes never get ridden so are in perfect condition.

Thanks again for the replies.
The bike will be used for mainly off road cross country use - Dales / Moors / Lakes etc. I was about to order the Mini Mula when I saw the deal on the Pahoehoe. With the £50 of free accessories in effect it only works out at £30 more than the Mini Mula and I quite fancy giving disc brakes ago.
STi Man - just come back from the Manx Rally - bet you've got some top off road trails over there! And the roads aren't bad either Still half considering going to the Manx GP
Luke interesting comments re Trek - that was another make I was considering. The Caldera has been brilliant though so I'm keen to stick with Kona.
Cheers,
Ian.

Well if yu do buy it from 1/2fords's(!!) take it to a proper shop to get it set up.. Those cowboys are very good. They are also the biggest Kona retailer in the country so should have good deals.
But if you ask me they are buying them so cheap the quality of the groupset etc will not be that good. Dont be impressed with a XT rear mec....they buy then in the 100000000000's and pay about £6.00 each. check out

Decided to go for Kona Pahoehoe 'cos I got a deal I couldn't refuse from Halfords. Basically paid just over £700 and got £50 of free accessories as well - not bad for a bike with a £1100 RRP
Initial impressions are good apart from the brakes. They seem to be rubbing slightly, don't have much feel and theres a lot of vibration through the bike when braking from higher speeds - maybe I just need to give 'em chance to bed in. Not too bothered 'cos at the price I paid for the bike I can afford to upgrade 'em in any case.
Cheers,
Ian.

Must congratulate you on your choice of a Kona. I've had a couple and they are the sweetest handling bikes out there. I went from a Kona Cindercone hardtail (the proper old school steel one!) to a Santacruz Bullit full susser, and i missed the Kona's handling loads. So much so i've now sold the Santacruz and am looking at buying a Kona Chute frame and building up a sweet trail bike. Just as a nod to the old ways even on my £2500 full on freeride 6" travel Santacruz, I had a purple anodised rear hope hub!

Must take it out again sometime. Well, get it out, oil it up, look at how cool it looks, and then put it away again before going and sitting back on the sofa with a beer.
