...No idea where to start with, but I quite fancy one - it must have an engine and somewhere to sit/stand... Nothing dearer than a scooby (though no idea what I should spend), and obviously not new.
So where do I start? What do I need to know? Where can I look at different boats and read reviews, I've found 'boats-for-sale.com' and think I like 'sportsboats' best, but I have no idea what to look for!

(don't go to too much trouble though, this 'fad' might pass!!!)

If you don't know what you want, why not get along to the Southampton Boat Show next month? At least it would give you a chance to see whats on the market and workout what sort of would suit whatever you plan on doing with it.
I'm guessing you don't know much about boats? You aren't required to get any training before you start driving powerboats but I'd really recommend you get some. The RYA Level 2 powerboat course would be a good minimum. Usually takes about two days, most sailing schools run them using Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs). Might save you from (a) hurting someone (b) damaging something and/or (c) looking like an eejit!

Depends what you want to do with it.......
Do you want it on a trailer in your drive or permanently moored somewhere ? If it's on a trailer where will you launch it and who will be with you - ie. how big can you handle.
Do you want to waterski or just blast around ?
etc. etc.
I had kids and the jet ski had to go, so I did the sensible thing and got one of these lovely toys

I have a 26ft regal sprts boat, seats about 6 comfortably but you could get about 8 on it, these cost about 14k-20k depending on size and age etc. I drove loads and loads and decided the regal was the best as it has what's known as a fast trac hull, basically when you get up to speed it creates a load of bubbles and the boat rides on these bubbles giving you awsome handling and performance - if you are thinking of doing it though then get an lpg conversion done! mine burns about £40 an hour of unleaded but only about £15 an hour now it's lpg.
If you are ever in the Poole area I'll take you for a spin!

My mate was going to buy one of those Sunseeker jobbies. Looked real nice so I asked him where he thought he would be sailing it, he replied that he wanted to go to the Med etc.
I had to laugh because I showed him the enormous fuel capacity (Extremely large fuel bill) but the range was still pathetic.
He thought he was wealthy, but he wasn't THAT wealthy. LOL

I used to have a Fletcher Black Max with a 115 Johnson, even that chewed the juice at a fair old rate, now just use a 25 year old tub with a 5hp Seagull, oh how the mighty have fallen.

Recommend the boat show. Went last year.
Was quite surprised what you could get for reasonable car money.
My favourite was a mad looking rib for 40k with 2x200hp Hondas and 6 Sparco bucket seats and nothing else. Rated at about 75 knots
Also saw the batboat there too

You can see Tiff trough the window.
