anyone got any suggestions as how to mount them on the wall/ceiling so they don't nut me, don't fall off, but are well out of the way?

simplest way: B&Q do various brackets, I bought 2 large plastic-coated hooks with threads that I screwed upwards into rafter....bike hangs by wheels upside down

Same here. Got a "party" pack of various rubber/plastic covered hooks from B&Q (I think). Screwed into roof joists.

Got bikes, garden power tools etc. all strung up.

Fairly cheap, took me an afternoon to sort.

P.S. Is the garage the new "shed" ?

Hanging basket hanger works for me

£3.50 B&Q, screwed to wall, bike sits on top & twirly bit stops it coming off.

A pair of plastic coated hooks screwed into the wall to hang the bike on and then some rope and a hook to tie the bottom of the wheels into the wall.

As above, I've got small plastic coated hooks that are screwed into the beams of my roof that safely hold up the mountain bikes with the scooby parked directly below. Very confident these are safe :0

Another cheap option is bend some flat bar into 'U' shape with a few screw holes secured to the ceiling also works.
