Anyone thinking of taking part?
Bournemouth to Aberdeen.
Several checkpoints along the way.
First to finish takes the £25,000
Unfortunately, it's not been endorsed by the nations police force so participants can expect "the sheriff" on their tail for the duration
All sounds like fun to me ('til you're up in court for speeding offences and dangerous driving), who's up for it?
Paul
PS Cannonball Run Europe is up soon too

COPS HOT ON TRAIL OF THE CANNONBALL RUN
GAVIN ROBERTS
16:00 - 22 July 2002
Scenes from the classic cult comedy, The Cannonball Run could come to the
North-east.
High performance cars and speed freaks are part and parcel of the event.
Over a number of hours they'll drive at break-neck speeds, ignore traffic
lights and flout road laws. But far from the on-screen antics of the madcap
racers, this will be for real.
Up to 500 drivers are expected to line up for the illegal 557-mile dash from
Bournemouth to Aberdeen next month, tempted by a first prize of £25,000. And
Grampian Police are facing their own race against time to uncover the
details behind the dangerous race.
The event is being pitched to speed freaks like those in the 1981 Burt
Reynolds films.
But police don't know where the start and finish lines will be drawn, or on
which day the race begins.
Traffic Superintendent Dave Cormack today said: "We have received word of
this supposed event and are working on finding out if the information is
genuine. We will also be speaking with police colleagues throughout the
country. One priority is to find out who the organisers are, contact them
and try to dissuade them.
"If this is a genuine event and it does go ahead it will be of much concern.
"Racing on the highway is a criminal offence and that's exactly what people
are supposed to be doing in this kind of event."
Superintendent Cormack said action would be taken and offenders would be
stopped.
News of the race was also worried road safety campaigners who fear
contestants will be encouraged to drive dangerously.
An AA spokesman said:
"The organisers might say they don't expect people to speed but that's
nonsense. If you want to win it you'll have to go like a bat out of hell to
be in with a chance of beating the rest."
The first Cannonball Run - named after cross-country pioneer Ernest
"Cannonball" Baker - was held in 1971 in which a Cadillac was driven 2,873
miles from San Diego to New York in seven days, 11 hours and 52 minutes.
