Can any of the North-West chapter say how good or bad the M6, around the Manchester Ship Canal is at the moment?
According to teletext, it is down to 2 lanes (from 4) and thus there are major tailbacks.
I am due to head up that way tomorrow, and would like to know if it is worth avoiding the area.
Cheers,

A50 north from Stoke will pop you out just below Thelwall Boomer. I use it to avoid the M6 a lot
Stoke > Holmes Chapel > Knutsford > Straight over Mere Lights > J20 M6.

Chris,
but it is the "big bridge" that i am worried about. According to my parents, local radio said today it was down to one lane plus the hard shoulder (normally four lanes, plus HS, plus a 10ft pavement on the outside), with tailbacks (southbound) up to J26 Some sort of emergency maintenance is being done?
I could try cross-country to the east of Manchester, but then you get stuck in all the cotton towns and black pudding fields
According to TheAArse web-site "M6 - Carriageway reduced to one lane. Slow traffic between Thelwall Viaduct and Junction 21 in Northbound direction." :double eek:

AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS ! I live in Knutsford, just around the corner, and I popped onto it this morning. 10 mile tailbacks, and it's utter chaos. Combined with the Tatton Park Flower Show on in Knutsford this weekend, and the traffic is utter chaos around here.

thanks for the local info - i will avoid the M6 tomorrow and try to find a "more interesting" route.
Any idea exactly what the problem is? I hear that they found something wrong with the old (northbound) bridge?

The work started on Friday, so you may of missed the fun. I believe there's a problem with the bridge, it's classed as "emergency repairs", whatever that means

Anyone know how long these repairs will take? I'm due to be heading to the fylde next weekend - Don't really want the traffic to be stupid, but there isn't another sensible way from Bristol P

AA website as of now reckons the work on Thelwall is Northbound 19th July 00:00 till 22nd July 23:59
Also has down a contraflow Southbound between 21 and 20 from 22nd July 00:00 till 22 Jan 2003

Update:
Well on (last) Sunday morning i checked the TrafficMaster web-site, and there was NO congestion whatsoever around the Thelwall viaduct at 10:30am, and it implied that Northbound was now clear, and Southbound was two lanes open.
Thus, despite all the sensible advice in this thread so far, i decided to give it a try
As i drove past J19 of the M6 (around 11:30), things slowed to a crawl - and even on a Sunday morning, it took over ONE HOUR to travel five miles The Northbound bridge was still open, albeit only two lanes (one intended for those exiting at J21).
The usual selfish driver syndrome was in evidence, whereby ignorant ***** continues to drive along the TWO closed lanes for a mile before the actual cones, then forced themselves into the legitimate flow of traffic - which exacerbated the congestion
On sunday night they were warning of SIX HOUR delays on the Monday!
As mentioned above, it appears that one of the main support bearings on the old but re-furbished northbound bridge has failed. They don't yet know why, but it will still take SIX MONTHS to fix AFTER the cause has been determined
Perfect timing for the Commonweath Games hey? It is a good job that they are not planning a rain strike! What, they are !
Currently they have implemented three narrow lanes in either direction on the Southbound bridge. Today i didn't fall into the same trap, and came home via the M1 and A38!!!!
Thus, steer clear of the M6 between J19 and J22 (either way!)
