I'm going on Holiday to Majorca in August so I thought I'd do the suprise-on-the=beach-as-the-sun-goes-down bit and give her the ring she so deserves. I've thought about buying it in Majorca but don't really fancy saying "I'm off for a couple of icecreams " and sodding off for a couple of hours in a panic....
So, Hatton Garden. Is that the best place? Everyone talks about how it's the place to go? I haven't a clue.....
Really fellas, any past experience, tips would just be great.

Hatton Garden "is" the place to go but the choice can be somewhat overwhelming to say the least. I made the mistake of taking the g/f (wife) with me & spent the whole afternoon trogging up and down looking in windows and shops, trying on only a handful. I found (& have done on a couple of ocaisions ) that the shop staff are really helpful and interested. Also open to a haggle If you had an idea what you exactly wanted, then it might be worth doing some research & finding a maker in the area to put it together for you. You might also get more carats for your money that way too.

I think the advantage you have is that if you buy the ring & give it to her, then she'll not have much choice in wanting a different one

Go to Birmingham, the Jewelry Quarter. (Biggest diamond centre outside Amsterdam ?)

Pick out a stone, and they'll get the ring made up for you.

I think it's better to let her choose it -- I mean, she's the one who's going to have to wear it for the rest of her life, and what if she really hates it?

If you do really want to do it your way, make sure you take the receipt with you (no, not in case a refund is required ). HMC&E may be a bit suspicious of a shiny new ring with box when you come back to the UK, so make sure you can prove you paid the VAT

Just do what Peter done to me told me how much to spend and went and ordered it myself.......that way she gets what she wants and you don`t have to trail around the shops

I've never worked out exactly how a man is supposed to find out that particular piece of information without giving the game away

Mrs C and I went shopping together (in Hatton Garden) for a ring after she'd already said 'yes'. Of course, it meant that I didn't have the ring to show her at the time, but that didn't seem to bother her too much

Usually they can have the size adjusted afterwards, so as long as you get one that's near enough (err on the big side, obviously), you can have it modified when you get back.

Best of luck, and don't let your nerves get the better of you at the crucial moment - it could be the best thing you ever decide to do. Trust me.

How about this then? You buy a cheapish but decent looking dress ring or similar which you present as and when along with a quality brochure/catalogue so she can later choose the "proper" ring on return. Saves you having an expensive ring on holiday (and a local shop could alter size if required) and she has the rest of the holiday to look forward to choosing the ring of her choice on return.

when I proposed, she didn't have a clue about it -even though we did it with style I picked the ring myself, and she really liked it, and it was her correct ring size.

A Tip - does she wear any rings at the moment? Most of the time, the wedding finger and the same finger on the other hand are the same size - so if she wears one on that finger, just get the size of it
