Right - need some help!!!
I'm in the middle of doing up a flat and it's driving me mad - need to book a holiday for me and the girlfriend the last two weeks of September to give us something to look forward to that's not going to break the bank!
Activities will basically be loafing around on the beach, cooking, eating, drinking - and if possible chance to do some dingy sailing and sea fishing....
key needs...
1. Sun (high 20's would be fine!)
2. Sea
3. Self-catering (I love cooking/eating so this is vital)
4. good local food markets etc
things to avoid
1. Loads of other tourists (so no big resorts)
2. long haul flights
3. 'Clubbing' atmosphere (getting way too old)
4. More than 1000 squid for flights/accomodation
Suggestions so far are Zakynthos and Crete..
Any ideas or essays on the subject?
big thanks
ian
Edited to say maybe I can stretch to a little more than £1000!!

Ian,
How about south coast of spain (costa del sol) ? Stay in somewhere like Calahonda (20mins from Malaga airport), near the sea, quiet, Upmarket marbella and puerto banus only 15mins away, if you want it mad then close to fuengirola as well. Or go 1 hour east of malaga to Nerja which is even quieter with an old town feel. Can easily find private owners renting self catering accomodation anywhere in the costa and a short hop on the plane!
damn im sounding like a travel agent! Just been there many times and buying a place there thats all.
Cheers
Gary

Go to their teletext page in early september and book a deal to the carribean/bahamas etc etc. Amazing prices for late deals.
Serious bargains, low number of tourists. Spend all night partying and you won't feel the long haul flight.
alan - off on honeymoon to barbados on monday for half price!

Sardinia and Corsica.
Fly to Sardinia with Ryan air and hire a car.
You can re-live tour de corse and see french and italian influences.
Quality (and cheap)

Davyboy - you git! Took the words right out of my mouth. South of Corsica is hot 9 months of the year and the rest is great wilderness, unspoilt, not many tourists and great food. The driving is fantastic although watch the Cap Corse - it'll scare the **** out of you!
Great place. Fly to Nice, hire a car in Bastia and spend to weeks travelling around. GREAT beaches at Bonifacio and Pallumbaggio (spelling!??!) Loved it.
I have the Lonely PLanet guide if you want it.

Cheers guys
Corsica is sounding very tempting - might check out Sardinia too.
Flights could be tricky from A'dam, but could always come via
London.
Anyone got any accomodation links for Sardinia or Corsica?
Did a last minute thing to Lanzerote last year, stayed in Puerto Del Carmen. It seemed to be a good place if you like that sort of thing, but just too much of a resort - most places seemed to be run by ex-pats.
Gary - I love Madrid and Barcelona, but i've never been to Costa Del Sol - my knee-jerk reaction is that it would be similar to Lanzerote, but then I know nothing
(and I'm saving Skeggy for our honey moon )

Ian, I stayed in a nice Hotel in Alghero, Sardinia, and a log cabin on a campsite in near Ajjacio, Corsica.
The flight go from Stanstead to Alghero airport, and I think you can get a Ryan Air to stanstead from Amsterdam.
You can mail me if you like. I have guide books for each Island.
